A native of Lockhart, he was a son of the late Glenn and Kate Dabbs Kendrick. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lockhart, Lockhart Masonic Lodge, Hejaz Shrine Temple and the Order of the Eastern Star. He was a former member of the S.C. Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Seymour Kendrick; six sons, Anthony "Tony" Kendrick of Charlotte, N.C., Keith Kendrick and Johnny Fuller of Lockhart, Larry Kendrick of Brunswick, Ga., Lanny Fuller of Shallotte, N.C., and Arthur Fuller of Wilksburg; a sister, Julia K. Griffin of Union; two brothers, Eugene "Gene" Kendrick of Chester and Ralph Kendrick of Jonesville; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Lockhart First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Clarence Crocker. Burial will be in the Lockhart Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. The family is at the home. ************************* FORMER COUNCILMAN DIEDS AT 66 ANNA BROWN Published June 7, 1998: Charles Kendrick was best known for two things -- the years he served as a Union County Councilman and his never ending supply of candy. Kendrick, 66, of Lockhart, died Friday morning in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health. He served on County Council for 18 years before retiring in 1994. He also owned and operated Kendrick's Service Station in Lockhart for many years. Nicknamed "The Candy Man," Kendrick gave out candy to everyone he met. Kendrick's wife, Myrtle, said her husband started giving out candy when he drove the church bus for Lockhart First Baptist. "Every Sunday, when he picked the kids up, he had peppermint for them," she said. "The elderly wanted theirs, too, so it got to where he gave them all some. He'd buy it by the box and give it out when he was politicking." Mrs. Kendrick said she and her husband had been married 29 years. "I miss him already," she said. Roger Wade, who served with Kendrick on County Council, said Kendrick did his best to make sure the people of Lockhart and Jonesville were represented. "He believed wholeheartedly in representing his community and helping his fellow man wherever he could," Wade said. Although he and Kendrick sometimes disagreed on political issues, they didn't let that disturb their friendship, Wade said. "There were several instances when we didn't see eye to eye, but we always remained friends," Wade said. Kendrick had been giving out candy for years, Wade said. "We joined the Shriners together in 1974, and he was giving it out then and that was before he got into politics," Wade said. Former County Supervisor John Greer said Kendrick always put his constituents first. "It was a pleasure to work with him," Greer said. "He was a very dedicated servant." Kendrick's funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Lockhart First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Lockhart Cemetery. Holcombe Funeral Home is in charge.
