The venerable and highly honored citizen whose interesting life record is here briefly set forth is a man whose life has not been devoid of adversity and care, but despite all the obstacles which he has met on the highway of life he has forged ahead, made a good living, laid by a competency and now, in the peaceful Indian summer of his years, is living quietly and happily in his comfortable home, enjoying the fruits of his past years of activity. Charles Edward Alden, of Greencastle township, Marshall county, is a native of Pennsylvania, having been born on July 23, 1826. He is the son of Adanniga and Vesta (York) Alden, who were born, reared and married in the East and who emigrated to Illinois in 1837, where they both died in the year 1839, on the farm which they had settled. They were the parents of thirteen children, three of whom are living. The son, Charles Edward of this review, was reared on a farm and obtained such education as was afforded in the pioneer public schools of his day in Illinois, and in that state he began life for himself as a tiller of the soil and he has always followed the same line of endeavor. In 1856 he came to Tama county, Iowa, and has since made his home in this state, seeing it develop from a wild prairie to one of the leading agricultural commonwealths of the Union. In 1865 he moved to the farm he now owns near Dunbar, Marshall county, thus making a continuous residence here of forty-six years, during which time he has made his place of one hundred and sixty acres produce abundant crops and it is today just as rich in productiveness as when he ﬁrst took possession of it, proving his skill as an agriculturist. He is now living retired from active work, spending his old age in the midst of comfortable surroundings. Politically, Mr. Alden was a Whig, later a Republican, and he formerly took a great deal of interest in local political affairs. He has served as road supervisor and as school director. He and his family have always been liberal in their religious views. Mr. Alden was married on January 28, 1864, to May Jane Magee, a native of Vinton county, Ohio, born January 9, 1842. She was the daughter of James and Nancy (Leech) Magee, the father a native of county Down, Ireland, and the latter of Pennsylvania. They spent their early lives in the East and in 1854 came to Tama county, Iowa, and settled on a farm where they both died, two miles east of Montour, Iowa. They were the parents of four children, all of whom are living, the wife of Mr. Alden being the youngest. The father was a farmer all his life, and politically he was a Democrat. To Mr. and Mrs. Alden the following children have been born: James W., Charles Clinton, Augusta, John D., Adaline C., Harry and Walter A., all of whom are living.
