Description	:	Charles was born in Surry County to the late William and Anna Mae Chilton Matthews. He graduated from Riverside Military Academy and Guilford College with a degree in Economics. He served in the Army in Germany from 1945 to 1947. Charles joined his father in business operating the Pilot Guano Company and various farming and real estate interests. Charles was involved in multiple activities in his community, served as a Director of the Farmer's Bank for over 30 years and for First Citizens Bank for over 10 years. He graduated from Riverside Military Academy and Guilford College with a degree in Economics. He served in the Army in Germany from 1945 to 1947. Charles joined his father in business operating the Pilot Guano Company and various farming and real estate interests. Charles was involved in multiple activities in his community, served as a Director of the Farmer's Bank for over 30 years and for First Citizens Bank for over 10 years. He was President of the Pilot Mountain Parent-Teacher Organization, a former chairman of the United Fund, on the Northwest Economic Development Committee and a member of the Pilot Mountain Planning and Zoning Board for many years. He belonged to Pilot Mountain Masonic Lodge #493 AF&AM and received his 50-year membership in 1999. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #142 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2019. Charles was a committed member of the Republican Party and was an active, benevolent supporter of many Republican candidates throughout his life. He was a lifelong member of the Pilot Mountain Friends Church. Charles' father and grandfather instilled in him an abiding love and respect for the land and he proved to be a faithful steward of the family farm. He was exposed to extensive travel early in his life and this helped to shape his lifelong passion to encounter new friends, experiences, ideas and opportunities. His final journey was met with the same optimism, positive resolve and constant faith in God. Charles was also preceded in death by his two sisters, Margaret and Anna Lee.
