Read More	Hartford Courant Wednesday, April 3, 1912 OBITUARY ___________ Charles Edwin Welles The funeral of Charles Edwin Welles of New York will be held from the Welles homestead in Elm street, Newington, at 3 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. The death on Tuesday morning at East Orange, N.J., came as a great shock to his many friends in that town. He suffered a severe illness a couple of years ago at which time his recovery seemed almost a miracle. He was the only son of the Edwin and Lucy Robbins Welles, old residents of Newington. While but a youth, he left home and went to New York, where he entered a broker’s office, beginning at the bottom of the ladder, as he was always proud to say, to learn the business. By reason of his fidelity and integrity, he speedily advanced until he was admitted to the firm. His next move was to organize the firm of Welles, Herrick and Hicks. For years they were located at No. 15 Wall street and carried on a large brokerage and banking business. Of late he had been located at No. 70 Broadway and the business was conducted under the name of Charles E. Welles & Co., a branch office of which was located in Chicago, Ill. Mr. Welles had been a member of the Congregational Church of Newington since 1875, although of late years, since the death of his parents and the breaking up of the old home, his visits had been less frequent. He never lost interest in his home town, and always gave liberally to the support of the church, or to aid in any improvements in the town. He leaves his wife, who was before her marriage Miss Alice Rogers of Bennington, Vt., and a son, Charles Edwin; also two sisters, Mrs. Elford B. Eddy of New Britain and Miss Fanny Welles, who had spent much of the time with her brother since the death of their parents. The burial will be in the Welles lot in the Center Cemetery, where a first wife, Mary Ames DeStyger Welles, is buried.
