Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, at McCabe United Methodist Church, 1030 North 6th Street, Bismarck, with the Rev. Art Scanson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Charles was born March 3, 1917, to Earl and Grace (Elder) Olmsted in Hebron. When he was 6 years old, they moved to Zap for two years and then moved to Bismarck. At age 15, he went to work for Wachter Transfer and Storage and worked there for 10 years. He helped haul the materials for the new capitol building. He was a member of the A Company of the 164th Infantry National Guard from August 1937 to August 1940. Charles married Katherine Kary Welder on Sept. 7, 1940, and together had six children. He was in the 91st Division and was given an honorable discharge in January 1945. Charles worked for the Bureau of Immigration at Fort Lincoln Internment Camp for one year. He worked for French and Welch for 10 years and Hedahl's (QB&R) for 30 years. Charles retired in 1983. Katherine passed away in September 1981. He married Vernae Saville McCullough in August 1982 and together spent 18 winters in Apache Junction, Ariz., where he enjoyed hiking, playing softball and golfing. He loved woodworking and was very proud of the fact that he built his own home. He was the past commander of the Disabled American Veterans, and member of the American Legion, VFW and a member of McCabe United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Vernae; three sons, Ronald and Charles (Gloria), all of Bismarck, and Gary (Shirley), Mandan; three daughters, Joann (Carl) Copeland, Bismarck, Judy (Steve) Nelson, Spokane, Wash., and Vicky (Allen) Weisenberger, Noblesville, Ind. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Katherine; three brothers, Keith, Sidney and Quentin; his sister, Edna Epperson; and his grandson, Scott Olmsted.
