In the beginning, Charles, his wife and four children were living in a tent on the homestead, later they built a house with lumber. Published Peace River Gazette 12 Apr 1951: Charles Elmer Lay, one of the early residents of the Deadwood District, passed away in Battle River Hospital, Manning, April 4. Born in Union Centre, Tennessee, on June 7 1882, Mr. Lay came to the District in 1929 residing on a farm since that time. His passing is mourned by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. R Robbins, Peace River, two sons James and John of Deadwood, three brothers Timothy in Florida, Oscar in Saskatchewan and Frank in Detroit, eleven grand children. Funeral was held April 9 at Deadwood Cemetery, Rev A Erickson officiating. Griep and Humphries funeral directors.
