Description	:	Charles Emery Razee was born in Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa on 5 April 1869 to George and Susan (nee Clark) Razee, the eldest of their 17 children. Charles with his family moved from Johnson County to Shelby County, Iowa between 1881 and 1883. Charles married Effie Runkle, the daughter of Jacob and Hannah (nee DeHays) Runkle. To date no records have been found for the marriage. Charles and Effie’s eldest, son Harry, was born in September 1891, which gives us an estimate of a marriage date for Charles and Effie around 1890. Charles with his family moved from Johnson County to Shelby County, Iowa between 1881 and 1883. Charles married Effie Runkle, the daughter of Jacob and Hannah (nee DeHays) Runkle. To date no records have been found for the marriage. Charles and Effie’s eldest, son Harry, was born in September 1891, which gives us an estimate of a marriage date for Charles and Effie around 1890. Effie was from Fort Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio. Her uncle, Daniel Runkle, lived in Harrison County, Iowa, which boarders Shelby County. It is likely she was either visiting or living with her Uncle when she met Charles. Family tradition has it that her family was not happy about the marriage, but it is not clear why. Perhaps it was because she would not be returning to Ohio. Charles and Effie left Iowa to farm in Nebraska, but the date of their removal to Nebraska is not known. Based on the birthplaces of their children it was between 1891 and 1894. All records associated with Harry indicate that he was born in Iowa. However an obituary posted on his findagrave memorial (#115142240) indicates he was born in Randolph, Cedar County, Nebraska. Charles and Effie had two other children who lived to adulthood, Elizabeth born in 1895 and Inez born in 1897. Elizabeth went by Bessie, and she told her children she had been born in Pierce, Nebraska. Randolph sits right on the boarder of Pierce County. Perhaps Charles and Effie lived in Pierce County, but Randolph was the closet town so that was where they did their business and would be associated with it. Either way, no definitive records to date have been found to confirm the location of Razee’s home in Nebraska. Inez was also born in Nebraska. Bessie attempted to locate her birth record in early 1960s when she was applying for a passport and was unable to find anything documenting her birth. Family oral tradition has Effie dying when her children were young, and that there were other children who died young. An obituary for Charles states, “His first wife and two little daughters passed away the same year when the children were small.” It is believed that the information for this obituary was provided by Bessie and/or Inez and that it likely appeared in a Cuming County, Nebraska newspaper as this is where Bessie and Inez resided at the time of Charles’ death. In the Panama Township part of a Council Bluffs newspaper, an article has been located that states, “The 2-year old daughter of Chas. Razee, who has been ill at the home of her grandfather, died Tuesday, November 27, and the funeral was held Friday.” (Daily Nonpareil Monday, Dec 03, 1900 Council Bluffs, IA Page: 2 from genealogybank.com) The article preceding this states the schools have been closed for two weeks on account of scarlet fever. There is a findagrave memorial that is believed to be Mary’s. The original creator of the memorial indicated, “Possibly the daughter of George Razee brother who lived in Nebraska. She died November 26, 1900 due to Scarlet Fever. She was born in Randolph, Nebraska and died at the age of 2 years 6 months.” Given the incorrect statement that she might be George’s brother’s daughter, it seem unlikely that the newspaper article cited above was the source for her death information. The assumption is the contributor had found a death record, which gave a death date a day different than the newspaper, but also provided a birth place of Randolph, Nebraska, which is consistent with other stated birth information for Charles’ children. Given Mary’s death in 1900 coupled with information from Charles’ obit stating that Effie and two daughters died the same year, it is assumed that Effie’s death year was also 1900. Bessie’s children have indicated that Effie is most likely buried in Nebraska based on information they remember from their mother. No information for the second daughter that died young has been located. It is thought that Effie could have died from childbirth related complications. Perhaps it was this other daughter’s birth, and she died as a very young infant. After Effie’s death Charles brought his family back to Iowa, where his family helped raise his children, at least Bessie and Inez. Searches (manual for Iowa counties Shelby and Harrison and Nebraska counties Cedar and Pierce) for census records for Charles' family in 1900 have yet to turn up any records. Perhaps Charles was moving between Nebraska and Iowa during the enumeration period. In 1910 Federal Census Charles is a hired man on the William Springer farm in Cass, Harrison County, Iowa; Bessie is with her aunt, Clara Razee Brace; and Inez is living with her grandparents, George and Susan Razee. No record has been found for Harry in the 1910 census. Harry met Anna Stuve in Iowa, and they married in 1913. They removed with her family (Louis and Louisa Stuve) to Bemidji, MN and had eight children. Bessie Razee married Edward James McGill in Wisner, Cuming County, Nebraska in 1922 and raised a family of six children. Inez Razee also married in Cuming County, Nebraska taking Leo Murphy as her husband. They had one adopted son. Charles married Anna Mundt in 1923 in Logan, Harrison County, Iowa. On the marriage certificate, his residence is given as Wisner, Cuming County, Nebraska. Charles died in Logan, Harrison County, Iowa on 1 March 1951. The obituary clipping cited above stated, “The family lived near Wisner on farms for about 23 years, moving back to Iowa, where they have lived the past 14 years.” This would indicate that Charles was in Wisner from about 1914 to 1937, and then lived in Logan for the rest of his years. The obituary ends with this statement, “Burial was made beside his mother in the cemetery in Dunlap, Iowa.” Ancestry.com user dianag145 posted this obit on 17 DEC 2011 to ancestry.com Harrison County, Iowa message board. Clyde Carter officiating. Burial was in the Dunlap Cemetery. Casket bearers were Floyd Pitt, Ed Hallander, Stanley Frazier, Roy Peterson, Donald Peterson and Virgil Peters. Mr. Razee was born April 5 (yr not listed) at Iowa City and passed away in his home southeast of Logan March 1, 1951. He had resided on the same farm for the past 14 years.
