Alden, for fifty-three years a resident of Clinton and all of that time prominent in the city's business and financial circles, passed away at his late home, 334 Fifth avenue, at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon, succumbing to an illness that had become critical in the last week. Funeral services will be held at the home at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon with the Rev. Dr. W.R. Agate, rector of St. John's Episcopal church, officiating. The Episcopal service will be used at the home and later at the interment in Springdale cemetery. In deference to the memory of Mr. Alden, one of its founders, the Peoples Trust & Savings Bank will close for the day at noon tomorrow. At the time of his death Mr. Alden was vice president of the bank, an office he had held for many years. He had been a director of the institution since its organization. The deceased, who was aged 74 years, was born in Augusta, Maine, July 7, 1849, and was a lineal descendent of John Alden. He was reared in Maine but in 1870 came to Clinton, where he engaged in the dry goods business as a member of the firm of Whitehouse & Alden, which partnership continued for twelve years and was one of the city's successful enterprises. Upon the dissolution of that firm Mr. Alden engaged in the coal business. As one of the founders of the Peoples Trust & Savings Bank, Mr. Alden was elected a member of the first board of directors and served on the board to the time of his death, also in recent years holding the office of vice president, to the duties of which he devoted his energies untiringly, as his principal business interest. He was married January 26, 1881, to Miss Harriet Lamb, daughter of Charles Lamb of Indiana who with his brother, two sisters two nephews and hosts of friends, are left to mourn his death. The brother is George Alden of Wolfboro, New Hampshire, and the sisters are Mrs. Thomas Shaw and Mrs. William W. Bierce, both of Portland, Maine. The two nephews, Richard Vose of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Alden Vose of New York City, are here, called to Clinton when Mr. Alden's condition became critical. The former is accompanied by hsi wife and son, Charles and Alden Vose by his wife. Fraternally, Mr. Alden was a member of Emulation lodge, 255, A.F. & A.M., of the Scottish Rite bodies of De Molay consistory. A.A.S.R. Masons, of Clinton lodge, 199, D.P.O. Elks of which he was a charter member and he was also a member of the Wapsipinicon club, which he served for many years as president, and of the Clinton Country club. He was a member of the board of trustees of the Jane Lamb Memorial Hospital Association. Although he was of an extremely modest and retiring disposition, Mr. Alden was much sought after for advice on financial and other business matters and gave freely of his store of knowledge and wisdom on those subjects. He dispensed charity lavishly but without ostentation, following closely the maxim of concealing from his left hand the acts of his right. Geniality marked his relations with others and he was always a welcome addition to any group. His death is generally regarded throughout the city today as a distinct lost to the community and expressions of sorrow were numerous in business and financial circles. Honorary pallbearers, including many of Mr. Alden's associates and former associates in the Peoples Trust & Savings Bank, of which he was vice president and had been a director since the organization of the institution, of which he was one of the founders, were as follows: Dr. J.C. Lengan, J.L. Bohnson, L.P. Allen, A.R. Olney,Henry Sanford, L.C. Eastman, A.G. Smith, W.S. Gardner, W.W. Cook,T.M. Gobble,F.S. Roberts, E.L. Miller, J.Q. Jefferies, J.H. Ingwersen now of Duluth, Minn. Active pallbearers were Walter Mather, Claude Hart, Christ Kroeger, W.L. Boyce, Edward H. Stephens, Charles Hestrup, George anderson and Fred G. Hansen. Present from out of the city to attend the services, in addition to Mr. Ingwersen and Mr. Mills, were Mr. and Mrs. Alden Vose of New York City, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Vose and son, Charles Vose, of Oklahoma City, Okla., Mr. Charles Lamb, Mr. Lindsley Lamb and Miss Clara Lamb, all of Michigan City, Ind., Mr. Joseph Young and Mr. Marvin Poole, both of Chicago, and Mr. Charles Schuler of Davenport. In honor of Mr. Alden, all of teh banks of the city were closed for the remainder of the day, the Peoples Trust & Savings Bank closing at noon and the others at 2 o'clock. The Clinton Age, Clinton, Iowa, January 28, 1881 A Lamb Led to the Altar Wednesday morning the elegant residence of Chancy lamb, Esq., was the scene of a brilliant gathering to witness the marriage ceremony which made man and wife. Mr. Charles F. Alden and Miss Hattie Lamb, niece of Mr. and Mrs. Chancy Lamb. The spacious mansion was rendered simply elegant in the interior by beautiful decorations and elaborate preparations for the occasion. Half past nine o’clock being the hour appointed for the ceremony. Mr. R. C. Flournoy, as usher, preceded and made way for the bridal party, who attended by the officiating clergyman, Revs. J. G. Cowden and E. K. Young, took their place at the bay window of the drawing room, beneath an elegant wedding bell of lace adorned with smilax. Divine blessing was asked by Rev. J. C. Cowden upon the couple about to take this all important step. The usual questions were then propounded man and wife. The benediction was then pronounced by Rev. E. K. Young, after which followed a season of congratulations, God speeds, etc. The large number of guests were then served a sumptuous wedding breakfast. The array of presents were large and included some very elegant gifts from the many warm friends of the happy couple. Mr. and Mrs. Alden left on the noon train for a wedding trip east.
