Description	:	Charles Allen, born in eastern Iowa, and son of Anson E. Allen, came to Audubon County, Iowa with his family in the spring of 1874, settling in Viola Township. That summer, they broke the first prairie with a team of horses and walking plow and sowed wheat. When the wheat was harvested, they hauled it to Carroll with the team and a wagon. Read More	Charles Allen, born in eastern Iowa, and son of Anson E. Allen, came to Audubon County, Iowa with his family in the spring of 1874, settling in Viola Township. That summer, they broke the first prairie with a team of horses and walking plow and sowed wheat. When the wheat was harvested, they hauled it to Carroll with the team and a wagon. (There was no town of Audubon yet). This was about a twenty mile trip, so the wheat was hauled one day and the team and wagon was driven home the next. Charles' father Anson E. Allen had bought 320 acres of section 7 in Viola Township from the railroad for $3.00 an acre. At that time the land was all prairie, no roads, fences, nor trees. The family lived in a dugout for 4 years until Anson built a house in 1878. The first wood building that the family built was a small stable to house a team of horses and 2 cows, their only livestock at that time. In 1891, they built a barn with mostly wooden pins, iron nails being used only to nail barn boards and bats. Charles inherited his father's half section of land in Viola Township in 1909. In 1914, Charles built a house, crib, chicken house and shed on the north 160 acres. In 1928, Charles retired from farming, dividing and selling the farm to his sons Fred Allen and Roy L. Allen. Some of the kin of Charles Allen, in addition to his sons Fred and Roy, include Roy's daughter, Helen Allen--Mrs. James Hennick of Exira, Iowa; and Fred's daughter Betty Allen--Mrs. Russell Larsen; and a great-grandson Roger Larsen who farmed and lived on the home land.
