Richmond. 27 June 1862; became acting nurse; was transferred to Chimborazo Hospital. No.5, Richmond. 3 March 1863 a being subject to frequent attacks of pneumonia and hemorrhages from lungs; was transferred to 3 Division General Hospital (formerly Small Pox Hospital). Howard's Grove. Richmond •. and assigned to duty as a guard on 13 January 1864; was. admitted to Chimborazo Hospital. Burkeville. Virginia on 6 April 1865. and arrived at City Point 13 April enroute to Point Lookout. Maryland as a prisoner of war. where he was released and paroled on 16 June 1865. He had fair complexion, dark hair. blue eyes. And was ,5 feet 9 ½ inches in height. While a patient in Chimborazo Hospital. Richmond. about September 1864. Charles met beautiful LUCY MARY MODES who with her mother or old maid aunt Melinda Rhodes. was visiting, her brother Catlett Rhodes. a corporal in' "Orange Rangers." 6t Virginia Cavalry. "Laurel Brigade." Lucy's. father, CATLETT RHODES. Was a prosperous Virginia farmer who resided at Verdiersville in Orange County? On the night of 17 August 1862. the great Confederate cavalry commander,, Gen.• "Jeb'" Stuart slept on Rhodes' porch and early the next morning was surprised by the Yankee cavalry of Gen. Charles and Lucy fell in love and at War's end wished to be married. Before he would consent old Catlett Rhodes sent a man on horseback to Newnansville. Florida to investigate Charles' family background. Evidently he was satisfied with the report he received for they were married and Charles was employed on the Rhodes plantation until after the birth of three children. then moved to Alachua County. Lucy was a delicate young woman and could not withstand the hardships of pioneer life in the wilds of Florida. She'" died after the birth of their fourth Child 1871. On 7 September 1814. Char1es was married to Cemira Paralee. called. "Tackie"." Stephenson (1854-1908). Twenty year old daughter Of Samuel T. Stephenson (1825-1875') .Elizabeth Narcissa Lyle (1827-1861).
