JEFFERSON BEE - Thursday, April 6th, 1905 - East Hardin, April 4 — Died, March 27, 1905, Mr. Chas. Kelly. Mr. Kelly was a highly respected resident of Hardin township for about 30 years. He removed a few years ago to Grand Junction, where his death occurred. A number of Hardin people attended the funeral on Wednesday. His daughter, Mrs. Dell Hastings and his other children have the sympathy of all this neighborhood in this double bereavement, the loss of their father now and of their mother a few months ago. The following suitable obituary is from the Grand Junction Globe: Charles Kelley was born near Huntington, in Baularness county, Canada, May 25, 1833, and departed this life March 27, 1905, at his home in Grand Junction. When Mr. Kelley had reached his majority, he soon left the home of his parentage and became a resident of Wisconsin having settled in Manitowoc county in 1855. From here he moved to Lake Superior, but soon after located in Kane county, Illinois. From 1864-67 he lived at Tipton, Iowa. In 1867 Mr. Kelley moved to Greene county and began life on a farm he had purchased. Since that time he has continued to reside in the county, either near or in Grand Junction. March 19, 1867 he was united in marriage to Miss Mariah J. Weeks with whom he lived for nearly forty years. Mrs. Kelley having gone on before less than four months ahead of her husband. Their married life was very pleasant as Mr. Kelley was an affectionate husband and father, ever anxious for the best interests of his family. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Kelley. Two died in infancy and two after reaching the estate of manhood and womanhood namely James R. who died in 1899 and Lettie E, wife of John Smith, who died in 1901. The children left to mourn for father and mother are: Charles G. of Jefferson, Delia E. Hastings, Bessie Rhoades, of Moorland, and Mollie F. In September 1861, Mr. Kelley enlisted in Co. A. 62nd Illinois Infantry and served for three years, being engaged in many hard fought battles. He was with his regiment in all its battles and participated in some of the most decisive engagements of the war. During the years of his residence in this county he has won the regard of all his acquaintances. His life was an upright one and the community has lost a good citizen. The children have lost a staunch friend and an able adviser. Obituary - CHARLES KELLEY, farmer, Grand Junction, was born in Canada East, near Huntington, May 25, 1833, son of James Kelley, a native of Ireland, now deceased. He was reared on a farm and educated in the subscription schools of his native place. In 1855 he removed to Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, thence to Lake Superior in 1857, where the people were so rough and uncultivated that he left in three weeks, and went to Kane County, Illinois, and remained two years. During the Civil War he enlisted in Company A, Fifty-second Illinois Infantry, and served over three years. He participated in the battle of Shiloh and all the battles in which the First Brigade, Sixteenth Army Corps was engaged. In 1864 he came to Tipton, Iowa, and worked there and at Clarence at the mason's trade three years. He then came to Greene County, which has since been his home. He has been engaged in farming most of the time, and owns 160 acres of land in Hardin Township, section 35. He was married March 19, 1867, to Maria Weeks, daughter of Gilbert Weeks, of Paton Township. They have six children -- Charles J., James R., Lettie E., Elma D., Bessie L. and Mary F. Mr. Kelley is a member of the Knights of Labor, and fully endorses the United Labor Party.
