He was born in Germany in 1846 and is a son of John and Minnie Gors, who came to America in 1857 and settled first in New York, where they lived four years, the father and the elder sons working out by the day. In 1860 the family came west and settled in Jefferon township, Bremer county, where they lived for a short time. Afterward the father purchased forty acres of land in Warren township and after selling this, purchased one hundred and sixty acres of prairie land in the same locality. Four years later he disposed of that property and bought two hundred and twenty acres which he operated until his death, which occurred when he was eighty-four year of age. His wife passed away at the age of sixty-four. To their union were born three children, one of whom died in infancy and another who passed away during the Civil war. The subject of this review is the only surviving member of this family. Charlie Gors began his education in Germany and later attended school in Iowa. He was reared upon his father's farm and at an early age became familiar with the best and most practical agricultural methods. Upon the death of his father he came into possession of the homestead of two hundred and twenty acres and upon this property has since carried forward the work of improvement and development, making it by his intelligent management one of the most attractive farms in this locality. In 1868 Mr. Gors married Miss Louisa Keller, a native of Germany, who came with her parents to America when she was still a child. The family settled in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and later moved to Bremer county, where the father engaged in farming until his death, following this occupation first in Jefferson and then in Warren townships. He and his wife became the parents of four children: Louisa, wife of the subject of this review; Fred, of Washington township; Edward, of Garretson, South Dakota; and Theodore, of Floyd county, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Gors have four children: Carrie, the wife of Henry Schroedemeier, of Warren township; Ella, who married William Weick, of Garretson, South Dakota; and Henry and Edward, who are aiding in the operation of the homestead. The latter married Miss Emma May Nichols and they had a son, Edward, who died in infancy. The two sons are in partnership with their father in the conduct of the farm and they carry on an extensive dairy business. The family are member of the German Evangelical church. Mr. Gors gives his political allegiance to the republican party and has served with credit and ability in the office of township clerk. As a progressive and public-spirited citizen he takes a commendable interest in the affairs of the community where he has resided for fifty-three years and where during the period of his active life, his influence has been a force in progress, development and growth.
