A well was being sunk in the engine room of the roller mill and had reached a depth of twenty feet. Charles Ellis had charge of the work and concluded to use powder to loosen the rock. A well was being sunk in the engine room of the roller mill and had reached a depth of twenty feet. Charles Ellis had charge of the work and concluded to use powder to loosen the rock. The charge was placed, the fuse lighted and Ellis was drawn up out of the well. After waiting for some time for the explosion he concluded that the fuse had not burned and approaching the well stooped over to relight it. At that moment the explosion occurred, casting the fragments of rock out of the well with terrific force. The flying missiles struck Ellis and tore the top of his skull off, scattering his brains on the walls and roof of the engine room. Death was instantaneous. C.G. Ellis was about thirty-five years of age and had lived in Adams county most of his life. He was married in 1891 to Miss Addie Reed and one child was born to them. Beside his wife and child his parents and two brothers and four sisters mourn his terrible death. The accident was an awful shock to the Mt. Etna community and universal sympathy is extended to the bereaved relatives. Deceased was well known and highly respected in the northern part of the county. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the Dunkard Church and the esteem in which the deceased was held was shown by the large attendance.
