OBITUARY - Plain Dealer, Wabash (IN) - April 8, 2004 Charles Harry Forbes, 86, Miller's Merry Manor West, died at 5:05 a.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at the manor. He was born on March 6, 1918, in Wabash, to George E. and Maud (McKinley) Forbes. He married Helen L. Holderman on Nov. 21, 1943, in Wabash. She died on June 30, 1960. He retired from the Wabash post office after 22 years as a mail carrier. He also worked for B. Walter Co. He was a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of St. Matthew's United Church of Christ, where he contributed to the construction projects such as cabinetry; Hanna Lodge F.&A.M., where he worked with Rainbow and DeMolay for 15 years; and Big Brothers for seven years. He worked with Friends In Service Here (F.I.S.H.), Meals on Wheels, and volunteered with Wabash High School athletics. He was named Mr. Football for Wabash High School in 1986. Surviving are a daughter, Julie K (James) Gackenheimer, Wabash; a son, Thomas E. (Christine) Forbes, Fenton, Mo.; two grandsons, Ryan Gackenheimer, Spokane, Wash., and Nathan Forbes, Fenton, Mo.; three granddaughters, Amy (Chris) Hunter, Buxton, Maine, Erin Gackenheimer, Valparaiso University, and Amanda Forbes, University of Southern Missouri. A sister is deceased. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Avenue Chapel. Burial will be in Falls Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday. Preferred memorials are to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
