Poppinga, 77, of Melcher-Dallas, who died on Tuesday, October 2, 2001, at the Knoxville Area Community Hospital, were held on Saturday, October 6, at the New Hope United Methodist Church. Pastor Randy Cormeny of St. John Lutheran Church officiated at the services. Dolores Milburn provided the music. Interment was at the Dallas Cemetery. Pallbearers were nephews Armand, Darrell and Ronnie Jensen, Gene Mathes, Jack Mitchell and Conrad Clark. Charles was born on January 5, 1924, in Gilmore City, to Heyke and Alice (Lighter) Poppinga. He and his family moved from Gilmore City to Melcher-Dallas where they made their home. Charles served his country during World War II in the Army where he received a purple heart for being wounded in the Philippines. After the service he returned to Melcher-Dallas and was married on December 22, 1946, to Sylvia Bennett. He owned the Jensen-Poppinga Sinclair Station with Miles Jensen from 1956 to 1962. He then worked as an engineer for 22 years for Frye Copysystems in Des Moines. He belonged to the New Hope United Methodist Church, the Masonic Gavel Lodge 229, the American Legion Post 632, he was a volunteer fireman, and served as the last Mayor of Dallas before Dallas and Melcher merged. In his spare time he loved to hunt and fish. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Helene Neer and Elva Johnson.
