The Lafayette Riflemen, paraded on the occasion, it being the anniversary of the formation of their corps. An elegant Standard having been procured for the Company by some of the Ladies of the place, the ceremonies of presenting it was performed at 11 o'clock, at the residence of the Hon. Judge Clagett, The Standard was presented by Miss Lucretia Clagett, daughter of the Judge, with an appropriate address, and was received with a suitable reply by the Ensign of the Company. Judge Clagett, The Standard was presented by Miss Lucretia Clagett, daughter of the Judge, with an appropriate address, and was received with a suitable reply by the Ensign of the Company. The Riflemen afterwards dined, with a number of citizens, at Ray's Hotel. In the afternoon the Company performed many evolutions and street fireings, all which would have been credible to the officers and the soldiers but from their too long continuance and the imprudent manner they were conducted, which unfortunately led to one of those untoward events, that often mar the pleasure of this consecrated day, and shows markedly the propriety and necessity of some change in the usual methods of celebrating it. And here it is with no ordinary emotions of regret, we have to relate, that in the imprudent ardor of the soldiers in firing, and from the too near approach of the spectators, unfortunately a young man was shot by one of the Riflemen, and so severely wounded, that he expired about noon the next day, in much agony - and to the nearly equal agony of his respected parents and friends, and a sympathizing public. .... The young man thus untimely sent out of earthly existence, was Charles Hazeltine, oldest son of Mr. John Hazeltine, of this town, aged 20. His funeral was attended on Thursday afternoon - at which was present the Company, in uniform without arms, with a badge of mourning, as a token of regret for the unhappy event, and of respect and sympathy to the bereaved and distressed parents. May the solemn spectacle abide on their minds, and on the minds of all, to the withdrawing them from the vanities of the world, to consider of their own approaching end.
