Elliott, proprietor of the eating place known as The Canteen, died Sunday night about ten o’clock as a result of a friendly scuffle with Woodrow Richardson in front of the Canteen. An autopsy Monday conducted by Dr. W. M. Summerville of Charlotte showed that the neck had been broken. The two had been scuffling for some time demonstrating judo tactics as practiced in the war. “Let me show you this trick,” said Richardson and whirled his opponent over his shoulder to the ground. Richardson was placed in custody until the matter could be investigated. At an inquest held last night in the courthouse by Coroner Wells, several eyewitnesses gave testimony showing that the engagement was a friendly one and the death was accidental. The jury, composed of Boyeson Langley, Lewis Garrison, Clegg Chaney, J. B. Carnes, Ben Keziah and R. F. Beasuey, Jr., rendered a verdict that the death was accidental and Richardson was released. The funeral of Mr. Elliott, who was 56 years old was held this afternoon at four o’clock at the Harris-Wells Funeral Home by Rev. Roy F. Whitley and burial was in the Monroe cemetery. Mr. Elliott was a native of Maine but had been engaged in business here since 1921. He is survived his wife, formerly Miss Allie Mae McGuirt, two sons, Richard Elliott in service in Wisconsin, and Charles Elliott of Monroe; his mother, two brothers and two sisters, all of whom live in Massachusetts.
