Mr. Hastings was born in Richland Center, Wis., March 24, 1857, the son of Charles R. and Diana Jones Hastings. When about six months old he came with his parents to Polk township, Bremer county, and was a resident of that neighborhood up to thirty years ago when the family established a home in Waverly. He was married Feb. 28, 1883, to Miss Ellen Williams at Plainfield. One daughter was born to them, Mrs. Maude Brechner of Waverly, who, with the widow and two grandchildren, Ellen and Jane Brechner, survive. A brother and a sister also survive. They are Clark M. Hastings of Verndale, Minn., and Mrs. Dora Farr of Rochester, Minn. Both have been here the past several days. Mr. Hastings was perhaps as well known as any man in Bremer county. For five years he was steward of the county farm and later served on the county board of supervisors for six years. During the six years the sugar factory was in operation Mr. Hastings was employed with the company here. He was one of the directors of the Waverly Savings bank at the time of his death and had served in that capacity for many years.
