Read More	KILLED BY HIS FRIEND William Kelly Accidentally Shoots Charles Hickman A Sad Ending of the Career of One of the Best Young Farmers of Whitman County A Bad accident occurred at the Whitman county fairgrounds a mile west of Colfax Saturday afternoon. It cast a gloom over the entire city and brought the target shooting then in progress to an abrupt close. While William Kelly, who lives on Union flat, was shooting at a 60-yard target, his rifle was accidentally discharged. The ball struck Charles Hickman in the right breast near where the arm joins the body, passing entirely through his breast, killing him instantly. The rifle is the property of Edward Johnson and is a 40-82 caliber gun. The ball must have either pierced the heart or passed through the body just above that organ, severing the main arteries and veins, for Mr. Hickman fell forward, blood spurting from his mouth in a great stream. The unfortunate man undoubtedly never knew what hit him, for he was dead before men who were standing only a few feet from him could reach his side. There were probably twenty or twenty-five witnesses to the accident, all of whom were standing only a few feet from the young man. George Perkins of Rosalia was standing, leaning against the same tree as was Mr. Hickman when the accident occurred. Mr. Kelly, when he saw what had happened, was prostrated with grief and it took great effort upon the part of those present to soothe him. He cried like a heartbroken child when he gazed upon the pale features of the man whom he had accidentally killed. Charles Hickman and William Kelly had been fast friends for a long time. There are none of the witnesses who place any blame upon Mr. Kelly, all agreeing that the accident was one of those queer freaks of fate that happen when least expected. Just how the accident occurred can hardly be known. It is supposed, however, that as Kelly was laying down to range his rifle at the target that an unusual motion of his body must have set off the gun, for the rifle carries what is known as a hair trigger, which the slightest jar will set off should the hammer happen to be set. Had the rifle been in exact range with the target, the slightest motion of the gun might have thrown the barrel out of range a quarter or half an inch, which would have been sufficient to have carried the death-dealing missile in the range which it went. No inquest was held over the body, which was brought to the Hall undertaking parlors as soon as a carriage could be summoned from town. After the body had been dressed large crowds viewed the remains. The body was taken to the family home near Almota Sunday morning, where it lay until the funeral. Alec and Frank Hickman, two uncles of the unfortunate young man, were in the city at the time of the accident. Charles Hickman was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hickman of Almota, one of the oldest and most respected pioneer families of Whitman county. He was 27 years of age at the time of the death and was a member of Royal Camp No. 116, Woodmen of the World. His untimely death fell like a heavy blow upon the family and the entire community, for he was known and respected by almost everyone. Charles Hickman was one of the exemplary young men of Whitman county. He was addicted to no bad habits, but was very fond of guns and took much interest in legitimate sport with rifles. He has had the management of his father's large ranch for the past five or six years and gave promise of proving a splendid business manager. Henry Hickman, his father, was in Colfax with him on that day and it is understood that he had just closed a deal whereby he had deeded to Charles a fine farm in the southern part of the county, making the young man a present of it. Mr. Hickman was to have been married soon to Miss Osie Wilson. His prospective bride was at the Hickman home on Saturday afternoon and answered the phone when the sad news of the accident was sent to the mother of the young man. Miss Wilson was almost prostrated with grief as she listened to the account of the terrible news over the telephone. This accidental death is one of the saddest ever chronicled in the annals of Whitman county. The funeral was held at the family residence on the Hickman ranch near Almota Monday, the services being under the direction of the Royal Camp, Woodmen of the World. Rev. Ulysses F. Hawk, the pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church of Colfax, preached the funeral sermon, which was a very impressive one. He was assisted by Rev. H. G. Edgar, pastor of the United Presbyterian church, and interment was made at the Johnson cemetery. The last sad rites were attended by a large gathering of sorrowing relatives and friends.
