Description	:	Charles Henry Locke was born April 30, 1840 Waterville, Oneida, New York to Horace Ford Locke and Mary Gilmore. He moved to Lincoln MT and worked in the mining industry. He married Emma Robinson on November 4, 1880 and they moved to Arbuckle, California. Read More	Charles Henry Locke was born April 30, 1840 Waterville, Oneida, New York to Horace Ford Locke and Mary Gilmore. He moved to Lincoln MT and worked in the mining industry. He married Emma Robinson on November 4, 1880 and they moved to Arbuckle, California. "Charles Locke in the late 1880s planted a sizeable vineyard and his winery apparently was of some size, for it was said that there as a standing wager that if a visitor could sample every tank in his cellar and then come out into the fresh air and immediately give his name, he would get five dollars. There were apparently many takers, but few winners. He sold one of his products, a dry muscat, for fifty cents a gallon, a very good price in those days. The phylloxera ultimately ruined his vines and closed the winery." according to A History of Sacromento Viticultural District. However, Charles was able to turn this set back into a success. "The way Arbuckle got started in the 'almond business reads something like this: C. H. Locke was a Montana miner transplanted to Arbuckle. His periscope and and other observation apparatus being of good quality and in good working order he observed that the oak trees about Arbuckle bore immense crops of nuts, sometimes known as acorns. From that he reasoned that Arbuckle country must be good nut country. In fact, it was he who discovered that Arbuckley is the home of the nut, a discovery his successors in interest have made much of. In 1892 Mr Locke acting on the above mentioned theory planted 21 acres of almonds, which grew and thrived and bore heavily." according to a History of Colusa and Glenn Counties, California Charles is noted in local history books as being responsible for starting the nut boom after he saw the huge potential of the area for growing tree nuts and convinced neighbors to grow them too.
