Charles was five years old and living with his parents, Charles Warren & Lucinda Jane Westfall Mitchell, when the 1880 census of Page Co., IA was taken. Eunice Was a beautiful blond girl. In April of 1879 Bert's sister, Mable and Eunice's brother, Luther were married just one year before Bert and Eunice's marriage, developing close ties between the two families. Eunice's eldest sister, Murtis Jane, was 22 years old and had a daughter, Minnie, by the time she was born. At the age of twenty six years, Bert started married life farming with his older brother, Walter, on the 'Hepburn farm' and Luther Morley was a partner of Cal Loy, husband of Effie May Mitchell, in a general store at Coin, an operation that was expanded to include a store in Blanchard, where Bert clerked for a while, the family moved to Blanchard. On 24 August 1894 Bert & Eunice and others were baptized by a Confession of Faith at the Methodist Episcopal Church at Yorktown, Page Co., IA Tragedy struck both families the same year. In February 1905, Mabel and a year-old daughter, Blanche, died in a gas lamp explosion in their home. Hugh became ill with 'summer complaint,' he looked a lot like Lyall as a child. When Hugh was learning to talk, when you asked him a question, he would repeat it after you instead of answering. He was husky-looking little fellow. In August the first born in Bert's family, Charles Hugh, was three and one-half years, died of a gastro-enteritis attack. Luther and his child, Edgar who was four years old at the time, lived with Bert & Eunice for a while. Time made changes, Effie May disapproved of Luther's eventual interest in other women and the partnership was dissolved as a result. Before 1919, Bert moved his family to the farm just across the road from the Star school, south of Yorktown, where Harold & Carroll were born in Lincoln Twp., Page Co. IA. Bert evidently was a second cousin to Johnny Appleseed, family recollections conjure a picture of him setting out orchards where ever he farmed. His plantings on each farm should have satisfied his yen for fruit trees, where about every variety of apple tree, dozens of cherry trees, several pear trees, peaches, about four mulberry trees, and a couple of long rows of concord grapes made enough to burden Eunice with canning problems, some bureau drawers with hard winter apples wrapped in paper torn from catalogs to protect them as they ripened. Of course, the family became well acquainted the problem of eating over-ripe apples, first in a spirit of conservation and hence, eating mostly rotten apples through every late storage period. Eunice used to churn in a barrel suspended on a frame in a horizontal position. There was a wheel, which had a handle which you clasped and turned around and around until a sloshing of liquid signaled that the butter had gathered. It took many a revolution of the wheel to change the thick cream into butter. She was a good cook and no doubt plenty of that good butter helped. They moved to Thurman, Iowa, not too far from the Missouri River, before 1914, where Bob was born. Harold says, Bert bought his first car about this time or just after the next move, a Buick 4-cylinder touring car, with button on side curtains. In 1914, Charles Herbert & Eunice lived in Thurman, Sidney Twp., Fremont Co., IA, where he was a farmer and their son Robert was born. While living in Friend, Fillmore Co. NE, Bert became quite ill with pleurisy. Eunice's sister went out to help, it took him a long time to recover. The family moved back to Coin, Iowa a few miles east of town, just before Dwight was born in 1918. Here also Helen was born in 1920. Carroll remembers, furniture had to be boxed in crates the family built around each item to ride safely in a box car on the freight train. The house was huge, but the family was large at that time and they could use all the room. Carroll's most quoted story came out of a call to the noon meal when he was about four years old [about 1918], He hedged; "Are you having fried mush?" No! "Well, I'm not coming in then!" He has always liked fried mush, but has never employed such an unyielding stance in protest since. Bert and family made their final move to a farm near Page Center in Harlan Twp. a distance of about a dozen miles. Here on the farm east of Coin he planted a new orchard but it hadn't started producing when he died. The farm consisted of 80 acres, corn, hogs, a few steers, 15 to 20 milk cows for the cream income, laying hens for egg income, with emphasis still on horses for power although the tractor was around for some use. The farm cost $200 an acre in 1924, on which the seller would accept only half in down payment and the $8,000 balance proved insurmountable in the depression that Bert did live to witness. Living demands were less in this day, the farm produced a great deal of food, standards were less extravagent. The children's recollection of one especially productive season at Page Center, brings the strawberry patch to mind. Which resulted in 200 quarts canned, wearing out Eunice and some assistants, and some fresh strawberry appetites. Bob became a strawberry hater for at least some time, after what seemed like a diet of fresh strawberries three times a day for weeks. In the children's memory is Bert making ears of corn beat a rat-tat-tat on the wagon backboard at picking time, a skill that is gone with the horses. Watching Bert lug two big pails of milk, filled right up to the rim but seldom spilling a drop, while he "place kicked" cats out of the way to the milk house, better than any football kicker inasmuch as ther were so many cats he had more practice. A laugh for all except Bert. when he absent-mindedly herd too closely behind a milk cow, that never knew a day of constipation, in the predawn darkness. Before the light of day could prevail there was more smoky darkness of word and thought from the cow's target before leaving to dress again for the day. Bert helped Lyall through college, fed and clothed a family of six children, had an extra burden in Carroll's care through the polio illness and attention in Iowa City. Carroll was a husky boy until the polio, Eunice, with the help of the family, took care of him until the doctor brought a nurse from Omaha to help. They were quarantined during this time. He went to Iowa City and was fitted with braces to help in his return to mobility. The children, Bert said as he dress up to go to town in his felt hat, a suit coat, newest overalls, what else could a man need? Their parents listening to the new entertaining marvel, the radio, and enjoying the old fiddler's contest on the Shenandoah stations. Although Bert & Eunice would not be described as demonstrative individuals, expressing their love and interest in their children as freely as many persons do, their lives were filled with hard work, care and feeding of a large family and not always in the best of health which can blanket true emotions. They passed on some strong emotional ties that have lasted the near hal-century since their lives ended. Family ties remained strong, trips to visit relatives only a few miles away at Yorktown or for several days at Gravity where agonizing slow or almost impossible on rain-drenched dirt roads, but Bert & Eunice made them, and full fledged family reunions were held as long as they could be maintained, building relationships among cousins that no longer seem possible in today's society. Even though the Mitchell's still have a reunion in Iowa each year. Charles died from a blood clot resulting from an appendectomy broke loose and stopped his heart the night before he was to return home from the hospital. A dismaying ending after his resisting an operation, trying to outlast the pain in hopes that it would go away, He began farming early in life and armed as long as he lived, he seemed to enjoy and be suited for it. Eunice died after a lingering illness of cancer of the colon, a generation ahead of the development of antibiotics that could have protected her against surgical infection as it did her son Carroll, in an identical operation 37 years later. After Bert & Eunice died, Eunice's brother, Floyd and Nettie, stayed with the children for a while. Helen went to live with a cousin, Blanche Hetzler at Cantril.
