MAQUOKETA EXCELSIOR RECORD - SEPTEMBER 10, 1918 - HOWARD BLACK PASSES AWAY WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT 10:30 O'CLOCK, SERVICES HELD SUNDAY AFTERNOON. The people of this community were shocked and deeply grieved to hear of the sudden death of Mr. Howard Black, one of our most prominent citizens, who passed away at his home in the city last Wednesday evening after a very brief illness of only three days from hemorrhage of the stomach. Mr. Black, who was born in Otter Creek on December 25, 1856, was 62 years of age and had farmed for many years in the vicinity of his birthplace. Mr. Black was united in marriage to Miss Josephine Denahay in October 1892. She passed away on February 23, 1896. He retired from farm life and came to Maquoketa in the year 1903, where he made a home for his mother until her death in 1907, and for his aunt, Delilah Michael who died in the year 1912. He had taken an active part in the business life of this city for the past fifteen years, having been engaged in the stock buying business which he followed successfully. He was also a stockholder and director in the Jackson State Savings Bank of this city, besides having served several terms as a member of the city council. He was held in the highest esteem by all of his business associates, who knew him as a man of kindly disposition and as one who was always the soul of honor in all dealings with his fellow men. His untimely death will leave a gap in the ranks of our townsmen, which it will be hard indeed to fill. Mr. Black was an honored member of the K. of P. and Odd Fellow Lodges in this city. One daughter, Miss Mona, is left to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father, one sister, Mrs. J.A. Wright of this city also survives. The funeral services were held from the home of South Fourth Street, Sunday afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. D.F. Boomershine officiated and the I.O.O.F. lodge had charge of the services at the grave. Interment was made in the MT. Hope cemetery. The following out of town relatives and friends were here to attend the funeral; Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Raymar and son Thomas of Marion, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kennedy and son, of Center Point, Mrs. Frank Floyd, of Center Point, I. W. Black of Colfax, Iowa, Paul Black, wife and two sons of Monticello, James Micheal, and Ryal Michael of Troy MIlls, Patrick Denahey of Independence, Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Johnson and daughter, Mamie of Cedar Rapids, Miss Mayme Slattery of Zwingel, Miss Mary Ann Deacon, and two nieces of Otter Creek, also many other friends from the surrounding country and towns.
