HOWIE DIES IN CALIFORNIA He Had Spent The Past Summer In Castle Grove Township The people of this vicinity will be surprised to learn of the sudden death of Charles Howie, at his home at National City, California, last Sunday, November 17. A neighbor found him dead in bed. He lived alone and owned an eight acre ranch and did truck farming on it. A message was sent to James Howie, a cousin, in Castle Grove township telling of the death. Mr. Howie's body will be shipped to Monticello for burial, and will not reach here until the latter part of this week. The funeral will probably be held from the Presbyterian church and burial will be made by the side of Mrs. Howie in Oakwood cemetery. Mr. Howie was a son of the late Hugh and Charlotte Howie and was born in Castle Grove township in the year 1867. The family home was on the farm now known as the Ed Miller farm. he was left an orphan at the age of seven year, and was cared for until he reached the age of majority by his uncle, Robert Howie of Castle Grove township. He was married to Nettie Hall in February, 1897. There were no children born to this union. Mrs. Howie died September 29, 1906 when she was 26 years and 1 month of age. Her body was buried in Oakwood cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Howie had made their home on what is known as "Rocky Hill." Charles Howie is survived by three brothers; William, of Melrose; Henry of Abilene, Kansas and another brother, John, who was adopted when a child by a family by the name of Pierce, and who now lives at Iowa City. Mr. Howie spent the past summer visiting in Castle Grove township; a portion of the time he spent with Mr. and Mrs. George Miller, and during the month previous to his going to California he visited with Mr. and Mrs. James Howie.
