He was born Nov. 5, 1929, in Valley Falls, son of Charles Joseph and Takla Lena Borovicka Newman. He graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1947. He received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Kansas State University and his master's degree from Southern Methodist University. He retired from McDonnell Douglas Corp., St. Louis, in 1987. He served in the U.S. Air Force from January 1951 through December 1954 and spent a year on Eniwetok in the Marshall Islands as part of a test support group for testing hydrogen bombs. He married Jane Briggs Dec. 29, 1951, in Miami, Fla. They were divorced. He is survived by a son, Paul Newman, St. Ann, Mo.; three daughters, Sue Reeds, Columbus, Ohio, Kathy Wear, Milwaukee, Wisc., and Valerie Alessi, Kirkwood, Mo.; a sister, Mary Jayne Nice, Topeka; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at Mercer Funeral Home, Valley Falls. Inurnment will follow at the Valley Falls Cemetery with military graveside services conducted by Grahem-Herbers Post No. 3084, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
