| Description | : | Charles came to America with his family in 1853 and settled in Kane County, Illinois. Charles and another family made a dugout, having only a jack knife, an axe and an old can to work with. The two families lived together in this dugout during the winter of 1854. The dugout was situated on the banks of the Fox River near St. Charles, Kane County. Charles and his wife supported themselves for several years by cutting and cording wood.
