A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 250 S. Faith St., Preston. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Preston, where military rites will be accorded by the Preston American Legion. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the church, where there will be a scripture service at 8 p.m. Friends also may call after 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Pape Funeral Home, Clinton, is in charge of arrangements. He was born on Dec. 17, 1935, in Dixon, Ill., son of Charles (Bill) and Honora (Nonie) Atkinson. He graduated from De Witt High School. Jack served in the Army for two years, stationed in Germany. After his service, he served for four years in the Army Reserves. He married Carol Messerich on Feb. 11, 1961, in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Preston. Jack was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Preston, where he served as trustee, usher, member of the finance committee and a member of the building committee in construction of the church in 1983. He was an active member of the Preston Fire Department for 43 years, serving as assistant chief for 40 years. He was a charter member of Community Ambulance Service-Preston since 1976, and a charter member of AMVETS Post 140, Preston, and member of American Legion Post 602. Jack was a member of the Iowa Firefighters Association, Jackson County Firefighters Association, Clinton County Fire Chiefs Association, Clinton County Firefighters Association, Clinton County EMS Association and the Knights of Columbus. He chaired the AMVETS Annual Easter Egg Hunt for many years and was an active blood donor, reaching the 16 gallon total. Surviving are his wife, Carol; eight children, Jon, of Preston, Jolene (Dan) Atkinson-Kruse, of Bettendorf, Jeffrey (Jodie) and Joel (Lisa) Atkinson, both of Clinton, Julie (Ken) Crow, of Bryant, James, of Park View, Jerrod (Christy), of Dubuque, and Justin, of De Witt; grandchildren, Jake Frahm, Stephen, Nathan and Jacob Crow, Karli and Krista Atkinson, Justin and Jillian Atkinson, Katie Jo Atkinson, Keaton and Kyle Stoll and Benjamin and Kathryn Kruse; sisters, Patricia (Franklin) Greve, Nancy (Marvin) Feist, Margaret (Roger) Stoecken, Mardella Dorrell, Rhonda (Steve) Brown, Bonita (Gary) Tebbe and Mary (Onie) Butt; brothers, Lawrence (Jackie), Joseph (Jane), Daniel and Steven (Deb) Atkinson; sisters-in-law, Linda Atkinson, Beverly Boultinghouse, Marie Rossmann and Barbara Dodds; and brothers-in-law, Charles Klinkner and Anthony Schultz. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Francis Klinkner and Kathleen Schultz; and brothers, William and James.
