Description	:	Charles Justin Hammond, 78, passed away October 28, 2017 in Oxford, Kansas. Charles was the youngest child born to Arza and Emma (Williams) Hammond on March 19, 1939. He attended the country school down the road from the family farm for several years. Charles graduated from Burlington High School in 1956. He married Martha Jane Romary on February 7, 1960. Charles was the youngest child born to Arza and Emma (Williams) Hammond on March 19, 1939. He attended the country school down the road from the family farm for several years. Charles graduated from Burlington High School in 1956. He married Martha Jane Romary on February 7, 1960. To this union five children were born. They later divorced. Charles was a lifelong farmer and truck driver. He raised his family on a farm south of Burlington. He hauled prairie hay to others all over the Midwest. He worked at Wolf Creek Nuclear Power Plant prior to moving to Emporia. After moving to Emporia, he drove for Dolly Madison Bakeries. In 2012, he moved to Winfield to be near his daughters and their families. Charles retired from the bakery and enjoyed his numerous John Deere tractors in his back yard. He was also an aid antique gun collector. Charles liked to show his children and grandchildren his atlas with all the highways he had been on during his travels. He enjoyed his baseball games. Charles is survived by: His children: Christina M. Brumley of Winfield; Kathleen A. Rhodes and husband, Jimmy of Winfield; Jennifer L. Stellwagon and husband, Joe of Lawrence; Justin C. Hammond and wife, Shelly of Emporia; His grandchildren: Christopher Brumley and wife, Sharilyn of Arkansas City; Casey S. Brumley and Lexie Perrett of Arkansas City; Kiefer Stellwagon, Reese Stellwagon, Carli Stellwagon and Rylie Stellwagon all of Lawrence; Anyssa Hammond and Daniel Whitaker of Emporia; His 7 great grandchildren; and Numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members. In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his sister, Marguerite Volland, brothers, Harold, Merle, Leo and Raymond Hammond and an infant son, Donald Dean Hammond. Private family services will be held at a later date. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. A memorial has been established in Charles’ name for the Coffey County Museum. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
