Oct 18, 1905 - Carroll Herald - A peculiarly sad accident happened Sunday east of town resulting in the death of Charles Kempker, eldest son of J.J. Kempker, county recorder. Charles and John Bowler, son of Mrs. Maurice Bowler, were enjoying themselves on a Sunday afternoon walk along the North Western track, not far from town. They had with them a target rifle, 22 caliber, and the piece was accidently discharged once while in the hands of young Kempker. It was then passed to young Bowler who walked in the lead for a time. In some way not explained it was again accidently discharged, the ball striking his companion in the breast. At first it was not known that he was seriously hurt, but shortly the real nature of the injury became known and with the assistance of young Bowler the wounded boy found his way to Thomas Scott's home, not far away. As soon as possible medical aid was procured and the boy administered to as much possible. He was taken to the hospital, but it was impossible to render him helpful assistance. The bullet, it was found, had passed through one lung and was supposed to be imbedded in the viscera somewhere. The wounded youth continued to fail, and along the latter part of Monday he passed away. The deceased was, as stated, the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Kempker. He was 17 years old and for a time has been a clerk in John Schachtner's grocery store. He was a gentlemanly boy and attend strictly to business. His death is a shocking loss to the bereaved parents, and those who knew and appreciated this excellent young man will keenly regret the unfortunate accident. The funeral was held this forenoon and a large concourse of friends followed the remains to the cemetery.
