WAS ONE OF OUR FIRST SETTLERS Chas.Newlon Came to Kingman County More Than 70 Years Ago In the early 1870's a young lad, Charles Newlon, came to Kingman Co. with his parents, who settled near Kingman on a farm, which they homesteaded. Young Newlon grew to manhood in this county an spent most of his life here. He worked for Santa Fe Railroad until his retirement more than 10 years ago. Charles L. Newlon, son of Samuel H. and Elizabeth C. Newlon, was born Oct. 19, 1855, at Charleston, Ill. He was the eldest child in a family of six children all but two of the six proceeded him in death. Mr. Newlon passed away in Kingman Hospital Dec.4 at the age of 92 years, 1 month, 15 days. On November 11, 1887, he was married to Emma Giertz. They observed their 60th wedding anniversary last Armistice Day. Mrs. Newlon has been hospitalized for the past 5 years. Five children were born to this union. The only son, Samuel, a veteran of WW 1, died shortly after the close of that war. Surviving relatives are the widow, Mrs. Emma Newlon; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Richardson, Mrs. Grace Goff of Kingman, Mrs.Gertrude Bridgess of Hutchinson, Mrs.Genevieve Riggan of Wichta; two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Rawlings of Hutchinson, Mrs. Ora Robinson of Kingman, also 16 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. Last Sunday afternoon, funeral services were held in Livingston Chapel, with Arthur Fleming and O.R. Henderson, Pastors of the Christian & Methodist Churches respectively, officiating. Interment was made in the Walnut Hill Cemetery.
