Description	:	"In 1850, while his family was still in NY State, Charles Jones, age 14, was living with his older sister Hannah Roy in Wells Township, PA. Two years later he went with his parents to Linn County, IA, and in November 1855 moved to Butler County. The 1860 census shows Charles with his wife Catherine and son William, living in the household of Reuben Miller, farm tenant (Marion, Linn Co., Iowa); Charles' brother Hervey was in the same household. Charles later purchased a farm and engaged in farming there until 1864, when he enlisted in the Second... Jones, of the hardware firm of Jones & Connolly, is one of the early settlers of West Point twp... from 27 Nov 1855. ... born Elmira, Chemung Co., NY in 1836. In 1852 he removed with his father's family to Linn co. Mr. Jones purchased a farm of Mr. John Hewitt [his brother-in-law], section 30, in this twp and engaged in farming until Feb 1864, when he entered the army....2d Iowa Cavalry. He served until Sep 1865, participating in a number of general engagements. He enlisted as a private, but later, was made sergeant. Mr. Jones resumed farming on his return.... until 1879, when he engaged in the sale of farm machinery, and in the fall of 1880, added the hardware trade to his business." (History of Butler...) His obit: "An Old citizen Passes Away: Died--At his home in Bristow, Iowa, Saturday morning, April 6, 1912 at 3 a.m. Charles Lewis Jones, aged 77 years..." "...one of the Soldiers' Relief Commission, had been associated with James Connolly in the hardware business... all his children around him, except Eugene who died in 1906. There are also ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was the last of a family of ten children. He enlisted in the War of '61.... for many years he was superintendent of floral hall at the Butler county fair, for many years a prominent member of the Bristow Masonic lodge, as well as being one of the very few surviving members of the local G.A.R.... Anna, who will be the most lonely, for she it has been for many years who has so faithfully and patiently ministered to the wants of a sick mother and father.... "Interment was made in the cemetery just west of Bristow by the side of his dearly beloved wife. The following out of town relatives were present at the funeral: Mrs. Lena Johnson of St. Paul, Miss Ruth Jones of Waterloo, Mrs. Edna Davenport of Chapin (Iowa) and Mrs. A. A. Sidmore of Dumont."
