IGNATIUS, MT -- Charles Louis Tellier, the cornerstone of his large and loving family, gave his final smile and wink to say "until we see one another again" as he made his way to heaven in the early hours of Saturday, December 4, 2021. He gracefully endured his last years with complications from diabetes, leading to kidney failure, including dialysis, being chauffeured by his loving and loyal bride, JoAnn, and carefully watched by his daughters and sons. In his words, he was "content". A member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, born on August 10, 1938, to Louis James Tellier and Mary Cecille Madsen, he was the third of three Tellier children (the first being his half-brother) and the big brother to five younger brothers and sisters born to his mother's second marriage to William Mackey McClure. The family lived in a little log house at the banks of Mission Creek where his elder sister later raised her family near the Mission. Chuck and Lucille led the kids in chores and caring for a big family in the days when money, water, food, and heat only came by hard work. He developed a work ethic, typical of the times, and became adept at technical trades later in life. In his early teens, he left the family home in St. Ignatius to live with his dad in the city of Spokane. His eyes would dance telling of all the travels with his dad who was a fluent Salish speaker, connected with several Salishian tribes in the northwest and the many celebrations, card games, stick games, war dances, and relationships built with the Kalispels, Spokanes, Coeur d'Alene's. He became family with many, and particularly with the Bluffs in Usk and the Michels in Worley. Living with his dad, who traveled to make a living, resulted in Charles receiving his secondary education at the Chemawa Indian School in Salem, Oregon, where he was the valedictorian of the class of 1956. He worked in the cafeteria to earn money for school and spent holidays with friends at the Celilo Falls, enjoying smoked salmon in the Longhouse and joining the fishing before the dam was built. Chuck and his best friends, Louie (Sav) and Bap Incashola, decided to enlist in the Army. Chuck tested high for engineering and went to engineer school at Fort Belvar, Virginia. It was an eightweek course, which qualified him as a heavy equipment mechanic. His work included plant maintenance (learned electrical and plumbing) and Indian Health Service for pump setting and plumbing, road building in the South Fork where he learned how to do the drilling and blasting rocks. He said some didn't want to mess with the blasting, but he didn't mind it… he respected it, but wasn't scared of it. Charles and Rose Hewankorn married in the spring of 1962, at the age of 23. They had two daughters, Colleen Monique and Charmel Rose. He was a widower in 1968, after her untimely death. This was a difficult time in which his daughters went to live with Rose's parents for the next four years. In 1971, Chuck met the love of his life. JoAnn Howard and her son Emerald Fred Jr. "Beep", and two daughters Gayetta Kim and Spina Cecilia stole his heart. This wonderful union brought his own daughters back and a great family story started to unfold. In 1974, his youngest daughter Cecille Isabelle was born. Beep was raised by his paternal grandparents in Browning, so Chuck had to go it alone as the only male in a household of confident females. What a strong man, a decisive, guiding and patient father he became. Chuck's fondest past-times, as a young man were playing sports (basketball, baseball, football, pool, and horseshoes were favorites). In the late 1970s he put away his own baseball equipment and began coaching his sisters and daughters in the regional women's softball league, giving birth to some heavy-hitting competitors called "Babes' Angels", sponsored by Babe Charette at the 44Bar. Chuck's pride and joy were his wife, children, and the many siles, sxepes, tupiyes, and nephews and nieces who shared the household over the years. He is survived by his wife JoAnn, of 48 years, and his son Beep Grant (Thedis Crow), his daughters Monique (Phillip) McDonald, Charmel (Bud) Gillin, Spina Grant, and Cecille (Bill) Brown. He is also survived by his brothers Rusty, Kenny and Jerry McClure, and sister Margene Asay. Chuck has 10 grandsons: Alex (Delena) and Emerald (Rayola) Grant III, Lucas McDonald, Everett Dean McDonald, August (Corrie) McDonald, Jimmy (Victoria) Michel, Stuart Grant, Jarred (Briana Steele), Justin, and Jayson Brown. He has 6 granddaughters: Jessica Grant, Phylicia, Katie, and JaNeal McDonald, Jaspen (Donny) Webster, and Tianna Brown. He also has 12 tupiyes: Jayden, Dani, Carter, Patrick, Kyson, Jameis, Taliya, Jameson, LaRhae, Austin, Jhett, and Vivian. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Gayetta Kim Grant McDonald, brother Louis "Punkin" Tellier, sisters Charlene Lucille Matt and Cheryl McClure, and too many cherished friends and relatives (namely, Bearhead Swaney, known as grandpa to his daughters). Traditional wake began Saturday, December 4 with Salish Prayers and Rosary on Monday, December 6, and Catholic Service by Father Hightower on Tuesday, December 7 at the St. Ignatius Community Center at 11 a.m. Burial followed at the St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery with full military rites by the Mission Valley Honor Guard. The family extends special thanks to Chucks health care providers, David Vaughn (St. Luke's Clinic), Dr. Chaudry, Community Medical Center Hospital Staff, and staff at the Dialysis Clinic in Polson.
