Kerr, Beloved Christian Citizen, Passed on Last Sunday Charles Melanethon Kerr was born July 10, 1859, at the farm home on Henderson Prairie, in Clermont Township, Fayette County, near Postville, and died at the University Hospital in Iowa city, April 11, 1931. He was the six of the seven children of George and Barbara Kurt, who remembers about sturdy band of Scott pioneers who settled here three quarters of a century ago. These early settlers of Henderson Prairie exercised a deep influence for good in this community. The family achieved nationwide importance through one of them it's number, Col. David B Henderson, for a number of terms speaker the national House of Representatives. The friends and neighbors of Mr. Kerr will gladly testify to the fact that a portion, at the least, of his illustrious uncle fell on his shoulders. What Colonel Henderson was to the Nation Charles M. Kerr was to Postville. Charles Kerr was born on a farm and, at the time of his death, was the owner of a the farm which had belonged to his father, George Kerr, and his grandfather Henderson. He was a man of powerful athletic build and spent the most of his life in the arduous toiled necessary to success on the farm. This toil however did not lessen his interest in intellectual pursuits. He was a great reader and student all his life and was always a leader in community and farm projects. His church occupied as much of his thoughts and interests as did his farm and his home. He was for years a deacon in the Congregational Church and when the present community Presbyterian Church was organized he was chosen one of the elders, which position he held at the time of his death. Mr. Kerr's mother, Mrs. Barbara Kerr, was a woman reverend for her piety and for her gift in prayer. Mr. Kerr seem to have acquired from his mother the gift of prayer and his prayers were long a benediction to the church. He was a ready public speaker and occupied the local pulpit many times. A number of occasions he was a principal speaker at the animals Farmer's Institute banquet here. Mr. Kerr was married February 28, 1890, to Annie Dodge of Newton. Mrs. Kerr is a cousin of John R. Mott. The new home thus became a union of near relatives of Postville's two famous citizens. The happy life begun on the Kerr Farm was continued there until November, 1926, when Mr. and Mrs. Kerr retired and moved to Postville. The home was blessed with five children. The threes stalwart sons, George, Kenneth and Malcolm, with their families, now carry on the Kerr name and traditions. Miss Kate Kerr, the oldest of the family, has been for several years connected with Lincoln Normal School for colored children at Marion, Alabama. The second daughter, Helen, wife of Herbert Benson of LaMoille, Iowa, preceded her father in death last November, leaving a family of five small children. Besides his wife and children, Mr. Kerr leaves to mourn his departure a sister, Mrs. Bert Marston of Postville, and 11 grandchildren. Charles Kerr was blessed with a happy, kindly disposition. Is boy like, fun-loving propensities did not desert him with the passing years. The sufferings of the past months did not quench his calm and cheerful spirit. He was a friend and neighbor to all who met him and everyone who knew him was his friend. He seem to be entirely unmindful of his own self-advancement and to live almost entirely for his family and neighbors. It is not out of place to wonder how far he might have advanced, with his native shrewdness, his ability as a speaker, and is fine mental qualifications, had he been placed in different surroundings. We who have had the benefit of his companionship are content that Charles Kerr lived as he did, and that his community had him for his own. The funeral was held from the Community Presbyterian Church at 2 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, and a congregation that taxed the capacity of the auditorium and annex was present to pay their last tribute of respect to a man they had known and loved. Rev. R. F. Galloway conducted the service and a male quartet sang two numbers. The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful. Internment was made in Postville cemetery.
