Father C. J. Williams, officiating. The mass servers were Lester Decker, Jimmie Decker, Bobbie Decker and Justin Decker. The casket bearers were two of his brothers, Bert Decker and Thomas Decker, two nephews, Clarence Decker and Pvt. Lawrence E. Decker, and two brothers-in-law, Joe Riebel and Ed Meyer. The body was laid to rest in Calvary cemetery. Several brothers and sisters were sick and unable to attend the funeral. Charley Martin Decker, fourth son of the late Martin and Barbara Decker was born near Hartford, Kansas on November 6, 1889, and passed away at his home in the southwest part of Burlington on Monday, January 3, 1944, at 2:30 p.m. at the age of 54 years, one month and 28 days. Charley lived all his life in Coffey County. He was born near Hartford and moved from there with his parents, brothers and sisters to their new home near LeRoy in the Valley neighborhood on March 3, 1902, where he lived until the time of his marriage on November 17, 1915 to Miss Regina Meyer. After this he lived east of Burlington in the Lakeside neighborhood for several years, moving from there back to the Valley neighborhood. in February 1923 they moved to Charley's father's farm in the same neighborhood, his father having built a house for them to live in. They lived there over 20 years, moving to Burlington September 9, 1943, on account of Charley's illness, and he resided here at the time of his death. Charley suffered a stroke on March 2, 1943, and never was very well since. He had the second stroke on his birthday, November 6 and the third stroke on December 29. He had been real poorly most of the time since November 6, feeling slightly improved for short spells then worse until the end came on January 3, 1944. Charley leaves to mourn his loss his wife Regina Decker and one daughter, Margaret Elizabeth Barker who is in service with the armed forces in Hawaii, one granddaughter, Betty Lou Barker, and ten brothers and sisters, Joe Decker, Frank M. Decker and Bert E. Decker of Burlington, Jake A. Decker of Neosho, Mo., Thomas Decker of Herington, Josephine Decker, Susie M. Kruger, Mary Agnes Shull of Burlington, Emma Anna Gorman of Lamar, Colo., Flora Elizabeth Riebel of Welda, and two who preceded him in death, a sister Catherine Decker died April 16, 1881 at the age of two years and a brother, the youngest of the children was still born on May 6, 1902. His mother and father also preceded him in death. His mother died Oct. 1, 1922 and his father on April 6, 1942. He also leaves a large number of nieces and nephews, many other relatives and a host of friends who are saddened by his departure from this life. Charley was widely and favorably known. Those here to attend the funeral from out of town were Pvt. Lawrence E. Decker from North Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Decker of Herington, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Riebel and family of Welda, Mr. and Mrs. Noel McCullough and children of Bush City, Mrs. Chas. Fetters and children, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Batson and Ed Meyer of Kansas City, Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Michaels of Waverly, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hayward of Baxter Springs.
