Fleshman, pioneer resident and business man here, met a tragic death last Friday night when he was drowned on the streets of Hawarden in the flood waters of Dry Creek. Mr. Fleshman had been unable to get home from town during the afternoon on account of the heavy rain and was caught down town when the creek went out of its banks, He was wading about the streets looking after his business properties during the early evening hours. Later on he sought refuge at the Gladstone hotel. He left the hotel and waded across the street to the City Hall. He started down the north steps of the City Hall with the apparent intention of crossing to the J. F. Keehn billiard hall which had not been flooded. Two boys started across the street just ahead of him. Apparently when Mr. Fleshman stepped off of the City Hall steps he was caught in the swirling maelstrom of the flood waters and carried off his feet. The boys just ahead of him saw him go down and attempted to go to his rescue but were powerless in the terrific current. Apparently he was rolled over and over in the water and after once going down was unable to again get to his feet. Searching parties looked for him all through the night but it was nearly 7 o'clock Saturday, morning when Ernest Anderson found his lifeless body lodged among some debris which was piled up against a wagon near the Anderson Auto Co.'s garage, a block west of where he went into the water. Owing to the fact that the undertaking parlors in Hawarden were flooded, the body was taken to the Walter Scott home where it was prepared for burial. Funeral services were held at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon at the Baptist church, conducted by Rev. J. E. Bruner, the pastor, and interment was made in the family lot in Grace Hill cemetery. The Masonic order conducted the burial service at the grave. Charles Max Fleshman was born in Wurtzburg, Germany, April 7, 1864, so was past 62 years of age. He came to America in the spring of 1881 and resided in New York City for about six months and then came west to Chicago and began work on the construction of the Northwestern Railway line and assisted in this construction work as far west as Hawarden. He liked the country here and in 1883 located in Calliope where he engaged in the meat market business He continued in this business in Calliope until 1886 when he joined the rapidly migrating procession of business men to the newer and faster growing town of Hawarden. He continued in the same line of business here until 1907 when he disposed of his business interests and began buying stock for shipment. He owned a number of different business properties here during his lifetime and at the time of his death was still the owner of the double business block occupied by the post office and Lankhorst's meat market, the latter building being erected by him in 1902. Mr. Fleshman was united in marriage with Emma Marie Fisher on Dec. 3, 1885, who is left to mourn his tragic death. Six sons and two daughters were born to this union. Four of the boys preceded their father in death, Edward, Lewis and Arthur all passing away within a period of three months in the year 1905 while Robert died in 1911. The four still living are Miss Ella, Carl, Mrs. Viola Doty and Fred, all of Hawarden. He is also survived by two brothers and two sisters in Germany besides a niece in Philadelphia. While engaged in active business pursuits in Hawarden Mr. Fleshman was always one of the city's most wide awake business men. He served as a member of the City Council for several years and his loyalty to Hawarden and its business and civic interests was one of his marked characteristics. His always genial nature won for him untold numbers of friends who learned of the shocking manner of his death with unconcealed grief. His home life was most happy and congenial and he was never in better spirits than when surrounded by the members of his family. The loss of three of his sons within a period of three months some twenty years ago was a burden which rested heavily upon him but which he bore stoically, rarely revealing outwardly the anguish that was in his heart. He was a good citizen, a splendid neighbor and the heartfelt sympathy of many friends goes out to the members of his family in their grief. Out of town relatives and friends who were here to attend the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Lundberg of Lake City, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. August Fisher and two children of Madison, S.D., Mr. and Mrs. R.,E. Fisher and two, children of Alcester, S.D., Mrs. Minnie Leary of Mitchell S.D., Mr. and Mrs. Gus Kroll of Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. Max Hagadorn of Sioux City, Paul Daniels of Sioux City and Fred Kroll of Omaha.
