Description	:	Like his father, Charles was a ship captain who sailed from Searsport (Waldo County) Maine according to the book Searsport Sea Captains by Colonel Frederick Frasier Black (1960) p. 135. According to this source, the bark Patmos of which Charles was the captain, burned off Cape Horn when bound from Hull, England to Valparaiso, Chile, with coal. Captain Nichols and crew were picked up from their boats by a Liverpool ship also bound to Valparaiso. Several days after the rescue, the weather was very bad with no observation possible. According to this source, the bark Patmos of which Charles was the captain, burned off Cape Horn when bound from Hull, England to Valparaiso, Chile, with coal. Captain Nichols and crew were picked up from their boats by a Liverpool ship also bound to Valparaiso. Several days after the rescue, the weather was very bad with no observation possible. There was every prospect of the ship going ashore just south of the Straits of Magellan. The English captain lost his nerve and voluntarily gave Captain Nichols complete command. The latter, with a double crew, was able to act quickly and extricate the ship from her precarious situation so she was able to complete her voyage in safety. Also, according to the above source, Charles sailed the following vessels: the bark Patmos (1876), the bark Arletta (1882), the ship Henrietta (to January, 1884), the ship Lucy A. Nickels (1883-1885, 1888-1890, 1895), the bark Charlotte A. Littlefield (1871-1872), the ship H.F. Hersey, the ship A.J. Fuller, and the steamers Alaskan (1904-1906), Mexican (1907-1908), Columbian (1910-1911), Georgian (1912, 1914-1915), Minnesotan (1912), and the American, Hawaiian, Isthmian, and Arizonan.
