Description	:	Charles Nathaniel Gilbert, 90, of Manchester, died peacefully at Hartford Hospital on Thursday, July 10, 2008, beloved husband of Barbara Nickerson Gilbert. He was born Nov. 7, 1917, in the family home, a farm on Johnson Lane in Middletown, the youngest son of the late Rev. George B. and Mary Jane Shelley Gilbert. Rev. He was born Nov. 7, 1917, in the family home, a farm on Johnson Lane in Middletown, the youngest son of the late Rev. George B. and Mary Jane Shelley Gilbert. Rev. Gilbert wrote a well-known autobiography, "Forty Years a Country Preacher." Charlie was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather and is survived by his son, David Scott Gilbert, and wife, Patricia, and their children, Paul Thomas Dean, Jennifer Elizabeth Dean, and Eric Nathaniel Gilbert and wife, Joelle; his daughter, Nancy Lee Green, and husband, Rick, and their children, Erin Elizabeth Scanlon, Michael Joseph Scanlon III, and Kevin Charles Scanlon. He is also survived by several nieces and a nephew. He was a member of the First Church of Christ in Wethersfield. He was educated at Woodrow Wilson High School in Middletown and attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston where he majored in clarinet and voice. For many years he had his own jazz quartet and played dance engagements in the Middletown and Hartford areas. His classical voice training was used as soloist in area churches as well as chorus work. In 1949 he joined The Hartford Times as a Classified Advertising salesman. He was soon promoted to the Times Public Service Department where he developed the free Times Travel Information Bureau. He organized The Times International Travel Club which offered special cruise ship visitations as well as trips abroad to its members. As Travel and Promotion Director, Charlie developed the travel advertising and editorial section in the Tuesday Hartford Times to one of the largest in the country. Before retiring from The Times he had been named Travel Editor. For four years, while at the Hartford Times, Charlie produced, directed and was master of ceremonies on a half-hour TV program seen on Channels 18 and 30. For several years he had a 15-minute radio program on station WTIC, Hartford, called "A World of Difference." In 1966 he left the Hartford Times to open a travel agency, Gilbert-Love Travel, in Hartford. He soon developed his own style of group travel featuring his very popular Jules Verne Journeys. These "Journeys" featured the highways and by-ways of Europe, and the coaches were ultra deluxe. He personally researched the itineraries and had his own special driver and guide. In 1969 he joined Bennett Tours, Scandinavia's leading tour operator, to learn more about operating group travel. After two years as Bennett's Area Sales Director, he returned to the family travel agency where, with his wife, Barbara, he continued until the agency was sold in 1989. Charlie was also active in Hartford's civic and cultural affairs as well as in the trade organizations. He was a charter member and past President of the Hartford SKAL Club and a long-time member of the American Society of Travel Agents. A member of the Hartford Civitan Club since 1950, he was Past President and Past Governor of the New England District of Civitan International. He received the International recognition of a Civitan Fellow and the District Honor Key. He was also cited by the Greater Hartford Chapter of the American Red Cross, the All-American Soap Box Derby and the Hartford County Fire Chiefs Association for his work with youth. He was a Past President of the Old Guard of West Hartford and his directorships included the Channel 3 Kids Camp, the Hartford Civitan Club and the University of Hartford Special Funds. A memorial service will be held at the First Church of Christ, 250 Main Street, Wethersfield, at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 13, with a reception at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Church of Christ, noting the Ministry of Music and the Arts, 250 Main Street, Wethersfield, CT 06109.
