When he was quite young his parents took him to Polk county, and in 1865 they brought him to Walla Walla county, Washington, where he completed his educational discipline, already begun in Oregon. His first venture on life's sea on becoming of age was the taking up of a bar claim on Snake river, near Penawawa, by squatter's right. Soon afterward, through the generosity of his father, he became one of the owners of the Penawawa ferry. Thus in the year 1874 he began his pioneer days in Whitman county as a bachelor ferryman. This, however, soon had the effect to convince him that it was "not well for man to be alone," and he returned to Walla Walla county and took to himself a "better half" and a quarter section of land near Waitsburg under the timber-culture act, and in 1878 he located a homestead near Uniontown, in this county. Commuting the same, after six months' residence, and returned to his former home near Waitsburg. He continued to reside in that locality until 1880, in which year he moved to Penawawa and engaged in the merchandise business. In 1884 he removed to Colfax and changed his business to that of handling thoroughbred stock and this in time led him to the establishment of the Colfax dairy, which he still owns. In 1899 he moved to his present place, five miles notheast of Penawawa, where he owns a magnificent tract of five hundred acres. Like many other farmers in the vicinity he combines stock-raising with fruit growing. He has a fine home, an excellent orchard and many improvements, all of which add greatly to the convenience and attractiveness of rural life. While Mr. Cram is not specially active in political matters and has never sought political or personal aggrandizement of any kind, he is rightly regarded as among the most active and potential forces in promoting the general industrial advance. His many sterling qualities have won him the esteem and regard of those who know him and his standing, wherever he is known in the different parts of the county, both as a business man and a member of society, is of the very highest. The marriage of our subject was duly solemnized in Walla Walla county, Washington, on February 9 ,1875, the lady being Miss Ella , a daughter of A.C. and Abbie (Carter) Dickinson, and a native of Missouri, who crossed the plains with her parents in 1863. They have six sons: Warren J., Harvey F., Alfred G., Clyde C., Floyd A. and George C.
