Folks was born in Monroe Township, Clermont county, Ohio, December 28, 1837, and died at Polson, Montana, May 21, 1926. At the age of 24 he enlisted in the United States service as a private of Captain Watts McMurchey's Company C, 12th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. For three years he served his country faithfully and was honorably discharged as corporal July 11, 1864. On February 20, 1868, he married Martha A. Bartlow. To this union six children were born, four of whom have passed on. In 1906 he and his family came to Somers, Montana. Later he took up a homestead on the reservation. In 1922 he came to Polson, where he lived until his death. Mr. Folks' health failed rapidly after the death of his wife, October 16, 1924. For a year and a half he was a patient sufferer. His daughter, grandchildren and friends did all they could to make his last days happy and peaceful. A few days before his death he quoted the following passage of scripture to his daughter: "In my Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am there ye may be also." The funeral services were from the Methodist church May 24th at two o'clock. Rev. Chappell spoke from Psalm 37, verses 1-21. At the grave the services were conducted by the Masonic Order. A firing squad from Company H of the National Guard, under the command of Sergeant Jack Goldsby fired the military salute. Taps were sounded by the company bugler. Mr. Folks is survived by his sister, Miss Retta Folks of Pt. Pleasant, Ohio; two daughters, Mrs. J. L. Sams of Sidney, Ohio, and Mrs. C. J. Enterline of Polson, Montana; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
