Application 679.785. Certificate 514.420. Charles Parker, the son of Allen Parker and Louise Peck, was born in Watertown, New York, August 14, 1843. Not much is known of the Parker family other than the family originally came from England. Charles enlisted in the Army during the Civil War at the age of 19 and served three years as a private in Co. M, 5th Regt. of the New York Volunteer Artillery. After the war, he moved to the State of Wisconsin. Caroline Euphemia Blount, the daughter of Stephen Blount and Pamelia Brower, was born February 21, 1850 in Picton, Ontario, Canada. The Bower family was originally from the state of New York, where they trace their ancestry back to Anneke Jans, who came to the New Netherlands from Holland in the early 1600s. Charles and Caroline were married June 12, 1870 in Brothertown, Wisconsin where she and her family had migrated from Canada. To this union, eight children were born: Fred, 1871; Floy, 1873; Charles Allen, 1875; Walter Lester, 1878 and who died in infancy, Mildred (Millie), 1879; Jennie, 1882; Helen (Nellie) 1885; and Kenneth, 1891 Fred married Stella Holmes and had one daughter, Evelyn (Mrs. Darrell Hanna). Floy, who married Irvin Surber, had eight children: Edna (Mrs. Fred Tornow); Mae (Mrs. Wayne Outhouse); Charles who married Huldah Mortenson; Irene (Mrs. Eldon Franklin); Nora (Mrs.J.R. Cartmell) and Mildred (Mrs. Melvin E. Olsen). Two children died in infancy. Allen Parker married Nellie Walford and they had two children, Darrell and Charles. Mildred (Millie) married Ed Mustard and had two daughters, Margie and Leora, Jennie married Joe Younkin and had two daughters, Bernice and Audrey. Helen (Nellie) was married first to Harry Kane with on daughter, Vivian and, second to LaMoine Rhodes with one daughter, Virginia. Kenneth Parker married Faye Pratt. Kenneth died serving his country in World War I. The Parkers moved by covered wagon to Chillicothe, Missouri, where they resided for two years before coming to Monona County, Iowa. They settled near Moorhead and lived in a dugout just south of the house on what is now known as the Ray Hoffman farm. It was the common thing for the Indians to beg for food and they were allowed to sleep on the floor in front of the fireplace. They were usually gone by daybreak. Mr. and Mrs. Parker were Charter Members of the Church of Christ when it was organized at Preparation. Mrs. Parker was a woman who during her days of strength, knew the meaning of the word 'Service'. She was one of the best nurses during those early days and she freely gave of her strength to the afflicted. Whenever there was sickness in her community, you would find Mrs. Parker rendering her service. In these days, there were no charges. It was done in the act of love. Charles Parker died May 22, 1898 and Caroline Parker resided in Moorhead until her death on December 25, 1925. Both are buried at Preparation Cemetery.
