Read More	Charles Preston McNutt January 24, 1923 - April 21, 2016 Charles "Chuck" Preston McNutt was born in Rodney, Iowa on January 24, 1923, the second of four children. He graduated from Castana High School in 1940. In 1943, he received a draft notice to WWII and proudly served our country three years in the European theater as a staff sergeant. In 1952, he earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Morningside College. Chuck moved to Boulder, CO to attend Colorado University's Master of Accounting program. A position as an auditor with the U.S Atomic Energy Commission brought Chuck to Grand Junction. Chuck retired from the USAE (later called the U.S. Dept. of Energy) in 1982. After his retirement, Chuck worked as a self-employed accountant and contract carpenter. Charles met Mary Lynn Cunningham, a Grand Junction native also working at the Atomic Energy Compound. They were married on September 27, 1963 in the Salt Lake City Temple. The couple lived in the Orchard Mesa area until 1970, when Charles received a work transfer to the Berkley office. Charles, Mary Lynn and their five children lived in Clayton Valley, CA until 1976. Another transfer brought the family back to Grand Junction. Chuck grew up in rural Iowa and learned to ranch, farm, fish, trap and hunt. He has many trophies to attest to his skill with horses. As a hobby, Charles raised cattle, sheep and most other imaginable farm animals. As a child, Chuck developed a life-long love for books and was a natural speed-reader. He was a student of American history, the U.S. military, and of politics. Exceptionally proud of his Irish heritage, Chuck's favorite color was green. His first winters in the Valley, Chuck spent weekends working ski patrol at Powderhorn Ski Mountain. He enjoyed hiking the valley's many trails and camping. Chuck's sharp mind allowed him to recount with remarkable detail and accuracy events/experiences from the Great Depression, WWII and many adventures before and since. He had a very quick wit and sharp sense of humor. He was very pragmatic and solution oriented. Honest, devoted and loyal are words which describe him well. He was a tender-hearted soul with a rough-and-tough, cowboy exterior. He was happiest with his family and in nature. From his deck, Chuck relished watching the sun set over the Grand Valley and seeing the Mesa and Bookcliffs illuminated in the evening colors. Charles' wife, Mary Lynn, preceded him in death in September, 2015. Charles will be missed by his five children: Kelli Funkhouser, Kevin McNutt, Kerri Beck, Timothy McNutt, and Amanda McNutt. He is the proud and devoted grandfather of Kourtnie and Konner Funkhouser, Alexandra Dewsnup, Isabella McNutt and Sydney Beck. He is sorely missed by his extended family and, many friends. Services are to be held Friday the 29th at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Redlands' building, 2235 Kingston Road, GJ. Visitation is from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m.. Funeral service starts at noon. Interment and military honors are at 3:00 p.m. at the Orchard Mesa Cemetery. Published in The Daily Sentinel from Apr. 26 to Apr. 27, 2016
