Description	:	In declining health the past year and hospitalized for two days, Charley R. DeNeui, former mayor, passed away in Sioux Valley hospital early Tuesday morning, Apr. 14, 1987. He attained the age of 95 years, one month and 21 days. Charley R. DeNeui was born on a farm in Turner county, two miles west of Lennox, on Feb.23, 1892, the son of Dirk and Ida (Carlson) DeNeui. He attained the age of 95 years, one month and 21 days. Charley R. DeNeui was born on a farm in Turner county, two miles west of Lennox, on Feb.23, 1892, the son of Dirk and Ida (Carlson) DeNeui. He attended Ashlawn rural school # 89 and grew to manhood on the farm, and assisted his parents with farming operations. On Nov. 2, 1916 he was united in marriage to Jane Harms at the Reformed parsonage in Lennox. The couple located on a farm one mile west of Lennox where they lived for four years, and then continued farming operations two miles west of Lennox from 1920 to 1938. They then took up their residence in Lennox. Here he operated a trucking service until his retirement. His wife preceded him in death on Sep. 1, 1950. He continued to make his home in Lennox and became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center on Apr. 5,1983. Mr. DeNeui served on the Lennox city council from 1948 to 1952, and then served as mayor Lennox form 1952 to 1960. He was an ardent fisherman and hunter, and had fished from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. He had hunted practically every species of game in South Dakota. At one time he served as president of the SESD Wildlife Club. Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by six brothers -- Harry, Ezra, John, Samuel, C.T. (Corney), and Royal DeNeui, and one sister, Mrs. Alfred (Florence) Haan. Deceased is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Bernard (Ida) Poppenga of Lennox: four grandchildren: Norma Kruger of Twin Brooks, Carol Diamond of Jenkintown, PA., Bernard Poppenga, Jr. of Lakewood, CO. and Janice Poppenga of Omaha, NE.; nine great-grandchildren: Monica, David, DeLyle and Kathy Kruger, Tracy, Chad and Curtis Diamond, Lisa and Gina Poppenga; one sister, Minnie M. Johnson of Chancellor.
