MOYS, PIONEER, HAS MADE A FORTUNE Had Less Than $500 When He Reached Whitman County—Now Owns 1200 Acres of Fine Land The story of C. R. Moys, one of the pioneers of this county, is a record of success attained by hard work, close application and strict economy. Mr. Moys was born in England in October, 83 years ago. He came to the United States with his parents when he was three and one-half years old. They first located in Chicago, but in 1857 heard the call of the land and moved to Lion county, Kansas, where they located on a farm. Here they remained until Charlie grew to manhood and was married to Emma D. Croyl. In 1877 his parents came to Washington and he followed with his wife and two children the next year. When he started he had between $600 and $700 in cash and the team which he drove across the plains. The journey occupied a little over three months. There were 104 wagons in the train with which he started from Cheyenne, but the party soon split up into smaller caravans. Among those who stuck with his party all the way were Chris Naffzlger and C. Colvin, now of Colfax. They had some trouble with the Mormons, who refused to supply them with water and were delayed at Boise, Idaho, on account of Indian hostilities. His parents had located a homestead near Almota and he followed suit, and for seven years was never away from his claim but one night. L. M. Ringer was then running a store at Almota, which was the supply point for this entire country, and Mr. Moys earned a good deal of money by hauling freight from Almota to Colfax. Below is a picture of his fine farm home, located three and a half miles northeast of Almota. He has lived on the land 33 years last August. The house was built 25 years ago, but additions have been made from time to time, until it now has nine large rooms. Water is pumped by a windmill into a large reservoir on the hill and from there piped to the house and barn. The stock barn is 50x66 feet and the barn for grain and machinery 46x56 feet. The big ranch includes 1260 acres, 1000 acres of which is in cultivation, and the balance pasture land. A small orchard, which produces some of the finest cherries raised on Snake river and a splendid vegetable garden, occupy Mr. Moys' attention and he also turns in and helps his two younger boys, to whom he rents the farm. Mr. and Mrs. Moys have been blessed with five children, three boys and two girls, all of whom are living and all are married except the youngest son. The old people occupy the big house alone, but are spending their declining years in contentment and happiness and take as much pride and interest in their home as when they first started to acquire it, 32 years ago.
