Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00pm Friday, January 7, 2011 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Brookings. Charles Robert Collins was born on December 20, 1922 in Brookings County, South Dakota the son of John F. and Belva Marie (Rexford) Collins. Robert received his education in Aurora, SD and was a graduate of the Brookings High School in 1941. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1945 until 1946. He continued his education at SDSU and graduated in 1949. Robert then taught Ag at the Brookings High School until 1953. He was united in marriage to Virginia Thompson on January 23, 1954 in Aurora. After their marriage they farmed the homestead in Brookings County until present. He was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church, the American Legion Hoffman-Townsend Post in Aurora, the BPOElks #1490, the Knights of Columbus, the Brookings School Board, the South Dakota Cattlemens Association, the Crop Improvement Association, the Aurora Better Livestock Club and served as 4-H Leader and as 4-H State President. Robert is survived by his wife Virginia of Brookings, one son Rex Collins of Aurora, SD; one daughter Vaughn Ripley (Joel) of Toronto, SD; two grandsons Ryan (Stacy) Collins and Nicholas Collins; one granddaughter Ashlee (Matt) Buller; two great-grandchildren, Gunnar Buller and Maverick Buller, one sister Mary Redmond of Brookings, SD; and one brother John Collins of Aurora, SD. He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother Tom Collins, one brother-in-law Kenny Redmond, one granddaughter Aimee Collins, and one niece Susan Zimmerman. Robert passed away Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at the age of 88.
