Born Feb. 7, 1940, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Charles S. Offutt Sr. and Gertrude (Ellsworth) Offutt. Chazz was a graduate of LaSalle High School. Read More	CUMBERLAND,MARYLAND -- Charles "Chazz" S. Offutt Jr., 66, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006, at Memorial Hospital. Born Feb. 7, 1940, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Charles S. Offutt Sr. and Gertrude (Ellsworth) Offutt. Chazz was a graduate of LaSalle High School. He had served in the Army National Guard. He grew up in SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. Chazz belonged to St. Patrick's Catholic Church, serving on the parish council. He had also been a member of St. Patrick's P.T.A. Chazz was a well known radio personality in Cumberland and the surrounding area. He first started in radio with WCUM in 1959. In addition to being a disc jockey, he had been the program director, operations manager and general manager during his 14 years at WCUM. At this time, he also became involved with the Teen Town dances in Frostburg, providing musical entertainment for the area youth. Chazz then made a career move, going to work for the Cumberland Times-News. He was an advertising representative for 19 years, demonstrating talent and skill in his field. Chazz had the opportunity to return to his beloved radio. He went to work at WTBO, where Chazz was known for his "Morning Road Show." He loved his listeners and providing them with their favorite music. While with the radio station, Chazz was able to become involved in many community projects. He was known for his work with the American Red Cross, County United Way, Toys for Happiness, American Cancer Society, Union Rescue Mission, American Heart Association and the Interfaith Community Food Pantry. In his free time, Chazz enjoyed raising and training various birds. He shared this hobby with his father, and then later, with his son, Chris. Folks could arrange with Chazz to have doves released for various occasions, including weddings and funerals. Survivors include his three sons, Charles Offutt III and wife Fatima, Birmingham, Ala., Daniel Offutt and fiancée Diana Vivas, Edison, N.J., and Christopher Offutt and wife Terri, LaVale; two daughters, Tammy Offutt and fiancé Tim Martin, Cumberland, and Cheryl Offutt-Veronick and husband John, Short Gap, W.Va.; two sisters, Mary (Offutt) Alt and husband William, Ridgeley, W.Va., and Ann (Offutt) Athey and husband Ray, Hilliard, Ohio; and 10 grandchildren, Amanda Offutt, C.J. Yantz, Adam Yantz, Shelby Offutt, Craig Offutt, Anthony Offutt, Jerry Garces, Michelle Garces, Nina Martin and Nikki Martin. Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Christian Wake Service will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Bernard Finerty, O.F.M., Cap., as celebrant. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Carson Yoder, Tom Cioni, Rich Cornwell, Pat Kavanaugh, Bob Hidey, Jim Van and Adam Yantz. Honorary pallbearers will be Craig Offutt, Anthony Offutt, C.J. Yantz and Rich Witte. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216.
