Read More	(There is no marker on his grave.) ~~~~~ The News and Herald Winnsboro, S. C. Sept. 21, 1898 A horrible accident. Mr. Charles Porter's arm torn from his body. A sad and all probability fatal accident occurred early yesterday morning at Mr. J. G. Walling's public ginnery. Mr. Charley Porter, the engineer, in passing from the engine to the press room, found a piece of bagging entangled in the shafting. He took out his pocket knife and attempted to cut the bagging loose, when his arm was seized between the bagging and the shaft and he too was drawn on the deathtrap with the bagging and was carried round at the rate of 200 revolutions per minute, and until his arm was completely twisted from his body, taking off all the flash up to his shoulder joint, leaving a naked piece of bone protruding about 8 inches long. As soon as his arm came off he was thrown violently to the floor, when it was found that every vestige of his clothing had been torn off by the shafting except his socks and shoes, and they were badly torn. Mr. Porter regained consciousness in a few moments after being thrown to the floor and lying there denuded of all of his clothing, battered, bruised, bleeding and one arm gone, he looked up to where the horribly mutilated limb dangling on the shaft and exclaimed, "Oh, my poor arm." After that heart rending exclamation, he bore his sufferings with the fortitude unparalleled and astonishing to those who gazed on his fearfully mutilating quivering body. As soon after the accident as possible medical aid was brought to his assistance. Drs. Coleman, Crosby and James Douglass were in attendance. After a short consultation they decide to actually amputate the shoulder joint with but little hopes of any good results. They went to work at once, and in the space of one hour the operation was performed, and to the amazement of surgeons and spectators he stood up remarkably well. He roused up and regained consciousness before he was taken from the amputating table and asked for a stimulant. Up to 9 o'clock last night he was doing as well or for better than any of us had hoped for. When we left doctors Douglas and Coleman were still in attendance and doing all that sympathy in medical science can suggest for his comfort. Later -- evening, September 13, no improvement as yet, but no worse at 12 PM -- Dr. J. R. Coleman. Still later -- more restless and no favorable symptoms. Little or no hopes of his recovery. W. J. Porter, who was so seriously wounded in Mr. Walling's ginnery, and of which are full was published in the News and Herald, died on Wednesday night following the accident. Mr. Porter was a consistent member of the Baptist Church was highly respected by the entire community. He leaves a wife, an adopted son(?) and other relatives to whom we extend our deepest and heartfelt sympathy in their sad bereavement. The funeral took place at Beaver Creek Baptist Church. ~~~~~
