Description	:	Charles Samuel "Sam" Killham was born and raised in Genoa, Nebraska on a farm. Farmed until 1936. Charles went to a country school and his class was essentially all cousins. Charles said they were not the most well-behaved; they gave the teacher more than a little trouble with their antics. Read More	Charles Samuel "Sam" Killham was born and raised in Genoa, Nebraska on a farm. Farmed until 1936. Charles went to a country school and his class was essentially all cousins. Charles said they were not the most well-behaved; they gave the teacher more than a little trouble with their antics. Charles and his cousins set off some fireworks in a barn, caught the barn on fire, and blamed it on the cinders from a steam engine that was passing by the area. Charles raised Hampshire pigs as a boy and entered then in the Nebraska fair and won several ribbons. In the early years of marriage, Charles and Bernice lived in Evansville, Wyoming, where Charles worked for the Texaco Oil Refinery and later for the Union Pacific Railroad Coal Mine in Superior, Wyoming. He was seriously injured in a mining accident in 1944, and the doctors feared that he might not ever be able to walk again. But with the help of God and a great deal of determination and hard work, he was able to regain the use of his legs and finally walk without even using a cane. In 1947, Charles and his family moved to Canon City, Colorado, and he operated his own service station for many years before moving to Longmont, Colorado, and then to Denver, Colorado, where he was employed by the City and County of Denver. Upon retirement in 1974, Charles and Bernice moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to be near their children and grandchildren. Charles remained active and enjoyed working outside in his yard and garden as well as working part-time for the Cedar Rapids Country Club. Charles was a quiet, gentle man and was well-liked by everyone with whom he came in contact. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather and was a friend to everyone. He was always the first one there to help whenever anyone needed it.
