Dunbar, whose critical condition was referred to in last week's paper, occurred at an early hour last Friday morning, when his spirit took quiet flight. On the previous Sunday afternoon a blood vessel at the base of his brain burst following some light exertion and he soon relapsed into a comotose condition from which he never really rallied. The funeral took place from the Methodist church on Sunday afternoon, under the immediate auspices of the Masons, in which he claimed the longest allegiance, although he was also an old and honored member of the Odd Fellows, Grand Army, and Rebekah oganizations. Rev. C. L. Gilbert conducted the church service, assisted by a select choir. The heavy rains of the preceding days, and the threatening aspect of the weather prevented many friends from attending, but the little church was overflowing, and the afternoon was free from rain. The interment was made in the Odd Fellows cemetery, following the brief Masonic burial service. "Uncle Charles" was a faithful lodge member, attending the several lodges to which he belonged to the last, and each will miss his presence and counsel. Charles Smith Dunbar was born in the village of Fabius, Chautauqua County, New York, June 1, 1831. He was of Scotch descent on his father's side and his mother was Mary Stark of Bennington, Vt., a niece of General John Stark of Revolutionary fame. Of pioneer stock, he early showed a desire to range along the "borders" When nineteen years old he wandered to the then far West through Wisconsin and Minnesota, to the present site of St. Paul and Minneapolis. He finally settled in Southern Michigan where on November 5, 1853, he married Orpah S. Norton, the oldest daughter of Hiram Norton, also from Western New York. Before his marriage and for some time after in company with his father he had possession of the old Windsor Hotel, located on the State Road between Eaton Rapids and Lansing, the capital. After a time he took up farming, but the lure of the West was still strong upon him and in 1861 he crossed the Plains to California with Montgomery's wagon train. In less than two years he returned by way of Panama and New York with sufficient means to take the family back to California when the spring opened. The home was burned and with it most of the money laid by for the "moving" and the journey to the "Land of his choice" was postponed. Responding to the call of '63, he entered the army, enlisting to enter the Engineering Corps, serving at the front in Company "E," 13th Michigan Infantry and was with Sherman on his march to the sea. After the close of the war a number of years elapsed before he again planned to travel Westward, but in 1883 he came to Oregon where three of his sons had proceeded him and later he settled in Washington, feeling that it afforded chances for homemaking and for the home feeling, as his brothers were also building in the Shelton Valley. He remained on the little farm in the valley until the spring of 1890, when he sold and built himself a home in Shelton, upon lots which he himself had cleared of timber this being the fourth time he had planted where grew the virgin forest, thus showing the pioneer blood from which he sprang. Always ambitious and energetic his spirit fretted under the infrimities of age when he found that the body could not perform the tasks which the mind had planned, but was permitted to remain fairly active up until within five days of his death. His was a kindly nature, appreciative of the value of friendship, of human sympathy and of brotherly love. A tender and loving husband and father, his chief concern in life was the comfort and happiness of his family, and faithfully did he labor to that end until death. He is survived by the wife who travelled by his side for nearly fifty-six years, a sister, Mrs. Mary. R. Hettrick of Diamondale, Michigan; a daughter, Mrs. Mary M. Knight of Shelton; four sons, C. Vader of Shelton, Wm. H. of Grandview, Hiram N. of Seattle and E. Prentise of Shelton; fourteen grand-children and seven great grand-children.
