Description	:	Charles Sterns The death of Charles Sterns which occurred Monday, November 7th at the home of his son William Sterns, was the result of a long illness. For some time he had been under treatment at a Creston Hospital with the hope that something might be done, but when it was found that his case was hopeless, he was removed to the home of his son, William Sterns, near Mt. For some time he had been under treatment at a Creston Hospital with the hope that something might be done, but when it was found that his case was hopeless, he was removed to the home of his son, William Sterns, near Mt. Etna, where his last days were made as comfortable as tender care could render them. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the church of the Brethren at Mt. Etna with Rev. harry K. Rogers and Rev. J. Thomas in charge. he was buried in the Dunkard Cemetery. Charles Sterns was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, April 4, 1848, and died November 7, 1927, being 79 years, 7 months, and 3 days old. He came to Benton County, Iowa with his parents locating near Shellburg when he was only 6 months old. This trip was made by boat on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and by oxen team after leaving the water. His parents were John M. Sterns and Mary Bollinger Sterns. May 19, 1862, the family started to California and after five months of travel on the plains behind an oxen team, they settled in Maryville, California. In 1867 Charles Sterns left California and came back to Iowa by horse team. May 12, 1868 he located three miles from Mt. Etna. On August 27, 1874 he married FranCena Thomas. for some time he ran the old mill at Mt. Etna. Mrs. Sterns died twelve years ago. the children are: Abraham Sterns of Corning; John Sterns of Mt. Etna; Mrs. E. B. Piper of Corning; W. E. Sterns of Mt. Etna; Mrs. Mary Piper deceased; Mrs. Edna Nichols of Huntington Park, California; C. R. Sterns of St. Paul all the children were here except Mrs. Nichols. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
