In all respects. Mr. Ripley, who lives on section 3 Trenton township, near Aurora, is a native of Northfield, Mass. He was born April tenth 1851. He is the son of Charles Torrance and Lucy Arabella (Holton) Ripley. Charles Torrance Ripley was born in Bennington, Vermont, where his father, Alden (wrong; should be Isaac) Ripley, also came into being. Mr. Ripley learned the art of daguerreotyping when young, and afterward established a studio in Northfield, Mass. In l855 he removed to Fond du Lac,Wisconsin, still continuing his business, which was considerable of a novelty to the Westerners at that time. Charles Tarrance Ripley died upon a farm in Fond du Lac County in 1861 at the age of forty-five. He was an artist in his profession, and many fine daguerreotypes made by him are still preserved. Lucy Arabella Ripley, our subjects mother, was a native of Northfield, Mass., where her paternal, grandfather, who was a Scotchman, settled many years ago. Several of his descendents participated in the early Indian wars and the Revolution. Charles Stratton Ripley received his schooling in Fond du Lac, Wis. And, and resided upon his father's homestead until after his majority. When twenty-three years old he went to Oakfield township, Fond du Lac County, and obtained employment in a lime kiln. After several years there he went to work for the Illinois Central railroad. In 1878 Mr. Ripley came to South Dakota (Dakota Territory), driving the entire distance from Wisconsin with an ordinary two-horse team. He secured in Trenton Township a claim, which is part of his present farm and improved it. The following year he hauled lumber many miles over the rough roads from Sioux Falls and Canby, Minnesota and constructed a house. Mr. Ripley experienced many of the hardships of the pioneer during those days, but resolutely withstood them all, and proceeded with the cultivation of his farm. He now owns three hundred twenty acres, about two-thirds of which is under the plow. This large acreage is plentifully watered by a stream called Deer Creek, which flows near by. When Mr. Ripley first located upon his farm he discovered several large buffalo skeletons, which had they been carefully preserved, would be a great rarity in these days. He possesses a robe which he secured from the Indians during the late seventies. Mr. Ripley is a Populist politically and was a delegate to the first state convention ever held by his party. He has has had a voice in nearly every state and county convention since, and is at the present clerk of the township school board, and has also been its treasurer. For the past four years he has been a Justice of the Peace. Mr. Ripley is member of Aurora AOUW lodge. On Dec. 22, l878, Mr. Ripley married Miss Sarah. Armstrong daughter of Asher and Adelia (Harris) Armstrong, of Fond du- Lac County Wis. Mr. and Mrs. Ripley are the parents of seven children. The children are listed as follows Charles Asher , Frank Holton , Floyd Stratton, Edith Adelia, Earl Armstrong , Bernard Asa , Lewis William. All of the above children have had excellent educational advantages. Mrs. Ripley is a member of. the Decree of Honor of Aurora. The entire family attend the Methodist Church. (Note) the above compendium is taken from ILLUSTRATED ALBUM OF BIOGRAPHY, Compiled about the year 1898. ***** PIONEER PASSES AWAY TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1914 Charles Stratton Ripley was born at Northfield, Massachusetts, April 10, 1851, and moved from there to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin when about three years of age. He came to the Dakota Territory in the spring of 1878 and filed upon a homestead south of Aurora, returning to Wisconsin in the same autumn and was married to Sarah Armstrong, Dec. 22, 1878. In the spring of 1879 He returned to his homestead with his bride where they lived and reared a family of seven children, all of whom have been spared to bless the home and comfort the mother. In the fall of 1906 the family moved to Aurora where they have since resided. Until a few days before his death Mr. Ripley Had been in the best of health, when he complained at times of a slight pain in the heart region, but thought nothing of it at the time. This caused a severe shock to the family and friends when death came suddenly on Tuesday, September 2nd. The funeral was held at the family residence at Aurora, S.D. Oct. 2, and was attended by a large concourse of friends and neighbors who came to pay their last respects to the departed and to sympathize with the family. The deceased was a member of the M.E. Church and the remains were placed at rest in Greenwood cemetery in this city. The widow, one daughter and six sons, also two brothers are left behind. The children are Charles A., Frank F., Floyd S., Edith A., Earl A, Bernard A. and Lewis W. The brothers George H. and Fred W., both reside in Kenosha, Wis.
