Description	:	He was born in Vermont He later moved to Centre township, Cedar, Iowa where he raised a family. He married Eliza Morgan on January 5, 1839 in Cedar Co, Iowa. Many of his children did not survive. Louisa Swetland did and married John C. Lucas in 1864. He is listed as a farmer on the 1850 census. The following was sent by Jacie. Tipton Advertiser 10 June 1869 pg 3 DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER--Intelligence was received here on Saturday last, by telegraph from Corrinne, Utah, of the death at that place of CHARLES SWETLAND, one of the early settlers in Cedar County. His remains arrived in Tipton about nine o'clock Monday evening; and on the following day, at the request of his wife, were taken in charge of by the Masonic Fraternity, and buried in the cemetery near Rochester with the ceremonies of the Order. Mr. Swetland came to this county in the spring of 1837, and for some time was located near Rochester. After returning from a trip to California some twelve or fifteen years later, he settled at Tipton; and after dividing his time between this place and Mechanicsville until last spring, he again turned his face westward, and was overtaken by death upon the plains of Utah. He has been engaged in very many business enterprises in this county with successes enough to have made him immensely rich had they been unattended by the many reverses which finally left him where he started. In his business transactions he was bold and energetic to absolute rashness; and his faults were not those of either a niggard or an ascetic. She also sent the following: "Charles was very instrumental in the beginnings of Rochester and Tipton. He was also one of the executors of Adam Graham's estate. The estate provided money for Charles and Nelson Swank, the other executor, to purchase the land for the cemetery, even though it had already been used as a cemetery. What I do know is that Charles arrived very early, around 1837, to Cedar county where he married Eliza Morgan in 1839. To my knowledge, they never traveled east but did go out to California in 1853, where 10 month old son, Franklin died. "
